I've been looking to build and/or purchase a portable reloading bench. Due to space restrictions and needing to be portable this idea fit my criteria. I found this link online and altered it to fit my needs.

It's a Black & Decker 425 Workmate with an oak box/platform bolted on top.

I found a 425 Workmate for $49 and the oak wood was purchased at a Menards. I've got about $80 in this portable reloading bench.

Hope this helps someone! :)

Bowhunter57,

I've got a similar rig. Mine consists of two plastic folding sawhorses I bought at Wal-mart and an old 2' x 2' (but very sturdy) table top. The tabletop has 2x4's on the bottom that keep it from moving.

Sometimes I take the whole set up to the range and reload there. Since I already had the table top the whole set up cost me about $20. I also have that same press, which I bolt and unbolt into pre-drilled holes as needed. It turns out ammo that shoots groups into ragged little cloverleaf patterns.

But please don't tell anyone about my workspace and gear because then I'd be embarassed over my skinflint ways.

Bowhunter57,

Nice looking bench. From the powders showing, it seems you are reloading handgun ammo.

Badger,
Thank you!

I have reloaded for many handguns in past years, but I'm currently reloading for a Henry Big Boy in .357 Mag. :) This rifle performs as beautifully as is looks. So far, I've shot 125gr. JHP and 158gr. JHP bullets out of it and their 3 shot groups can be completely covered with a nickel. This evening I reloaded some 158gr. LSWC (hard cast) bullets with 2 different powders and will test shoot them for best grouping tomorrow.

I'm looking for a bullet for hunting coyotes and am looking for 2 criteria. Tightest grouping and good penetration. So far, all of them are grouping very well.

At 25 yards, here's a 3 shot grouping using a 125gr. Hornady XTP and 9.0gr. of Unique, which are the holes from 10 o'clock to 4 o'clock at the bottom of the hole. The 3 shot grouping at the top of the hole is the 9.5gr. of Unique and the same bullet.

I was cramped for space & built one like that minus the shelf around 30 years ago. Worked nice for what it was. I put a side extension on it that was hinged to give me more work area.

Here is the definitive portable bench:D

The press has a "standard" base that is common with the Mortising Machine that is shown hanging on the wall. The wall mount is a simple shelf with tongue_and_grove and a dowel that hold it in place, so you just lift it up and off to remove it from the wall. The "standard" base can be mounted on the work bench or on the truck tail gate sub-base with 1/4 inch bolts that screw into T-nuts that are epoxyed into the underside of the work bench and tailgate sub-base. The tail gate sub_base attaches to the tail gate with bolts that simulate the tail gate latch. To attach, you just line the sub-base up on the tail gate and push down until it clicks into place. There are wing nuts on top to tighten it up snug. To release, you just lift the tail gate release lever.

A WorkMate and section of plywood has made a lot of temporary benches over the years.

That old powder scale is a classic. I love magnetic dampening too much to go back to one of those but they were good in their day and still work just fine.
