View Full Version : Gearing up? Where do you go?
Just looking over the inventory over the weekend...
I'm gonna need a dozen arrows built up and some 100-grain heads . Coupla limbsavers, too.
So where do you go when you need to get some gear?
My 'local' shop isn't that convenient and his prices aren't great. That's not so bad, because the guy does have to make a living, and he doesn't cost much more than having things shipped from a so-called 'discounter'. But his selection ain't much and frankly, I know that if I go in there asking him for arrows with actual by-God feathers on 'em, he's gonna bust my chops for the better part of 10 minutes over it.
I've never had much inclination to leave my money with someone in the habit of telling me that my personal preferences are flat out stooopid, so I'm pretty much open to working by mail....
Anybody have a favorite for great service and fairly competitive pricing?
And do feel free to philosophize on the good or evil of local shops vs. mail order vs. trying to snipe something off of ebay.... :D

I just had 6 arrows fletched with feathers, and the guy at the shop did try to bust my chops a little, and I just teased back that if they don't work for me I'd just be back to refletch, and he'd make out on the deal twice. Don't worry one bit about what the guy behind the counter thinks. It ain't his money, yet.;)
I do prefer to go and shop in person to buy, but I also have a big Bass Pro, and two decent archery shops between work and home, and a mega Cabella's on the west side of KC. It's pretty easy to find the equipment I want. When I buy stuff at the smaller archery shops, I know I'm spending an extra couple of bucks, but that is usually cheaper than the driving and gass to hit every shop in town looking to save $2-$3.
I've never had anyone at the big stores handle my bow, and I really don't trust them for bow maintanence like I do the smaller shops.
Lots to be said for being able to stand at the counter and look the guy in the eye, which is why (at least partly) why I don't mind the idea of spending a couple extra bucks here and there if he's got what I want.... Trouble is, mostly, he doesn't have what I had in mind and he'll bust my chops for asking about it...
Tell ya, though... with people charging $20/dozen for solid feathers and $35 for barred, I'm thinking I might end up fletching my own.... I already know what I like, so I should probably buy myself a 'lifetime' supply and be done with it...

Not having a lot of local choices, I shop online for the lowest price on whatever I've decided I want.
Right now I'm ready to hunt. :)
but,
... I'm going to buy some aluminum climbing sticks and I think I've found the best price on what I want too. I'll post the link after I order. ;)
arrows ... I buy bare shafts and fletch my own. ... something I enjoy doin. I refletched a few ragged feathers last week, puttin the finishing touches on my huntin arrows.

Lately I've been buying arrows on sale in the make/size I use and usually refletch them to suit. NCBowman inspired me to buy a fletching jig and to start doing my own. It's easy once you get the knack.
I now buy most of my supplies on the web from a variety of sources.
