Last March I got a call from the processor I last used. He was asking if I wanted to buy venison that hadn't been picked up by his customers. I was under the impression that you couldn't buy or sell venison. (Actually, I guess he could claim he was giving the venison away and just selling his processing services.)
I didn't take him up on it, but it sounds like a good deal, in a way.

I am not sure. I know for the most part you are not allowed to sell game or game parts. But then taxidermist are allowed to sell unclaimed mounts so there maybe provisions for situations like your butcher's as well.
I would be hesitant to accept as gospel any layman's answer on this one.
One thing about this situation legality aside you would be buying something of a pig in a poke because you have no idea how the game was handled getting to the butcher.

True, but then again for the price I could toss it if it wasn't good.
My own venison costs a fortune per pound, so I want IT handled properly.
This particular processor mishandled my last order, so I guess it's not a good idea in this particular case.

Interesting question- I have always thought it illegal in most states to sell wild game and most times it is but may be a difference if it was killed on a preserve?? Some laws are different for preserves than wild beasts.
In any event I agree that I want my meat and want to know how long it has been dead etc.
