I like the looks of the 5 inch parkerized G.I. bread & butter model. Since I have been shooting my Ruger 22/45 every day nearly, and you know that Ruger was developed as a training gun for the 1911, I have become quite good and fast with it. I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum that is not getting much use . I am contemplating maybe a trade . I like the G.I. model. I don't want one all tricked out with Wilson this, Clark that, etc. .

I've got the GI model. I thought the trigger was too short and didn't break very cleanly. In addition, if I held really high I came close to getting nipped by the hammer. I swapped in an aftermarket trigger, bobbed the hammer, and did a little sear work. Left the exterior otherwise pretty stock military looking. I like it now. HOWEVER, the other day I was dry firing a "Plain Jane" Rock Island 1911 (similar price point at the store I was visiting) and I've got to say that it felt a lot better than my Springfield Gov. This one had a great trigger from the factory and the tolerances on everything else felt tight.

Well that is good to know. I will try to get a pic of it on line.

I have the Springfield too. It's a nice pistol for what I useit for (not much). When I first got it, I shot the heck out of the thing, and it feed and ejected very reliably, and has been hassle free. Mine has the very low sights, and it would be better to swap them out if top accuracy is what you want. I don't remember the exact price but bought mine for less than $500 out the door with a spare mag.
By trading the .44, you'll be losing a gun that you could hunt with, but if you don't hunt with it anyway, it may be a good option.

The reviews of the Rock Islands on the gun websites have been generally quite favorable. Although the trigger seemed lots better on the RI I tried, an argument can be made for paying more for the Springfield based on American manufacture and higher resale/trade value. As I recall, the Springfield is a forged frame rather than a high quality casting so if you were thinking of something like a 460 Rowland conversion it might also be worth the extra bucks.
Anyway, I just thought I'd throw the RI into the ring for consideration.

I see the Rock Isl. is the same as Charles Daley and High Standard models. They all come from the Phillipines. I wonder how much more the Springfield Mil Spec is ?

Well, the market is so screwed up right now it's hard to say. I think the difference used to be about $100, but it would be more like $200+ to get the Springfield trigger anywhere near as nice as the RI I handled.

I will go to the next show . They have them here all the time. Guess the first thing I better do is get a snap cap, though at the show I seriously doubt you could even chamber a snap cap. Like I said, I don't need a Gold Cup, just something nice . I find it hard to part with my Ruger Super Blackhawk. But I may. We'll see.
When I got the Blackhawk, I purposely traded in my off duty weapon for it, a Smith 4043. I never liked that Smith. And since I had just gotton out of the LEO business for good, I had no problem trading it. But that Blackhawk is Stainless Steel, 7.5 inch barrel, and I load 44 magnum.:confused:

You don't need snap caps with a 1911. It is ok to dry fire them.

Yeah, but tell that to a vendor. I anticipate such things out of respect, like taking off your shoes at a friends house who has nice wood floors.

No way am I getting rid of my Super Blackhawk. I am going to start shooting it more often. Fine Handgun.
I bought a blued and a parkerized 1911A1 clone from a local gun shop and have shot them a lot. They function well and I really like them. They are not the same as my Colt Mark IV Series 70s or Gold Cups, but well worth the money. All the best...

LampLighter,
Are you looking at a M1911 or a M1911A1? I have both models and like them equally as much.

Lamplighter.....Say, are you planning to use this pistol for carry use?
I have Kimbers, Sigs, Smith & Wessons and Colts.
