Anybody getting after it yet, or are we all still biting our nails and waiting for an opener?

Yeah, that's what we've got in CT, but my chances of having all of my paperwork settled by then aren't too good.

CO must've opened over the weekend, I'd expect. I still have half a mind to see if my brother feels a need for a buddy later on in the season, but I'm runnin' outta time to book a flight and it's not as if I've done any conditioning work, so I know for a fact I'd be on a crash diet up there (and I don't have anything to lose, when you get down to it....).

I'd better at least get on the stick and order up my tags, and visit my landowner with a very nice bottle of wine in hand....

Vermont's first bow season is Oct. 3 to Oct. 25. Then there is a second
season combined with our ml season Dec. 5 to Dec. 13.

I've been down to where I hunt two evenings in the last week to watch
the fields where our stands are.
The first evening I saw 11 deer. 5 were bucks, all still in velvet, all were
shooters. Here we have a no spike horn rule so any thing bigger than a
spike is a shooter.

I go nuts this time of the year knowing the deer are there and waiting to
go after them.
I envy you guys that can get after them this month.

I did see something that surprised me last night. Four of the bucks were
together in a group and even though they all are still in velvet they were
putting their heads together like they were going to fight but didn't
actually do any shoving. They were being very careful.
I always thought that the bucks wouldn't even mock fight as long as their
horns were still in velvet.
I also saw one buck rubbing his face in some over hanging branches like he
was going to make a scrape. I didn't think they would do that until after
they shed the velvet.
That's part of what I like about spending time watching nature, you can
always learn something.:):)

Along about now, the velvet should probably be starting to dry up, so maybe they're able to feel that it's tougher than it was?

All of this behavior is triggered by the amount of daylight, so the hormone levels are constantly shifting at a relatively slow rate... They're probably starting to feel a familiar tingle 'long about now...
