Only 2 zones are open at this time. The rest of the state opens Oct. 1. They have a hotline to call to find out how many are still left on the quota. The Lolo zone has 2 tags filled and the Sawtooth zone has 1 filled as of 9/4.

That sure doesn't read like they are putting much of a dent in the wolf population. They had a piece on TV yesterday about some guy who got some publicity for shooting a wolf and he has been besieged with irate phone calls and e-mails from the bunny hugger crowd.

Our dumb state officials have a wolf pictured on our endangered species license plates. I dislike wolves a great deal and am repulsed when I see that license plate probably like most of the deer hunters in the state. There are near a million deer hunters in this state and lots of us would buy a wildlife license plate if it had a deer on it like MN. does. Given what a lot of us saw last deer season, a deer will be an endangered species if we don't do something about the predation. The first animal that I saw last deer season was a timber wolf and they are like rats in that for every one that you see, there are ten that you don't see.

Very few hunters will go out specifically for a wolf. Deer and elk seasons don't open until 10/10. I think it'll pick up considerably after that.

The statewide count is up to 21 now but most of the seasons just opened yesterday. General deer season opens 10/10 and elk on 10/15 so I expect the tally will climb in a hurry after that.
