Puppy dog got into a bad one today. I have no idea what kind but she's down.
She's been bit probably 6 or 8 times in her life but not like today. I'm worried she won't make it thru the night. :(

She's still breathing. Looks like she got hit three or four times. Head, ear, and at least one in the neck/shoulder.
The boys gave her an aspirin and an antibiotic last night. She's still down but will get up now. Last night she wouldn't/couldn't get up. She was gone over 4 hrs yesterday, highly unusual. I think she was down in the woods because she barely made it to the back door yesterday evening.
I'm lettin her sleep it off.

Black snake can make a dog sick I would think that anything poisonous around your parts would kill a dog with one bite.
Hope she dose well Alan.

Ncboman, dog gets bit by snake, first administer (according to weight) a Bufferin Tablet for pain every 4 hours. If dog is over 40-lbs give 2 Bufferin ok.
Also give a dose of Benadryl (1 teaspoon per 60-lb dog) 3 times a day (24hrs) and keep dog quite and give plenty of water.
Now if this is a rattlesnake bite, you need to get the dog to the VET ASAP! The above works for the venom of a copperhead only. The dog will swell up a bunch but in 3 days things should be looking much better.
In regards to the rattlesnake venom, the above medication seems to slow down the venom of the rattlesnake but it will NOT keep dog from dying from the venom inflicted........Anti-Venom is the only thing that works.
I have heard some folks say, that using a high electric charge will weaken the venom of a rattlesnakes effect on humans and dogs but have never seen this with my own eyes to say it works. Good Luck! ;) :)

Hi Ball,
I killed a copperhead a week or so ago and laid it on my woodpile to skin. It was quite dead and had stopped moving. Didn't stop puppydog from tearing it to pieces as soon as she spotted it. :o
I doan take my dogs to vets except to get fixed. I think they build some resistance and around here, they better. :D

Ncboman.....Several of my males German Shorthair Pointers have been bitten at least once every year for the last 4 years. The first thing I do is take off their collars, to keep swelling from choking off their air supply.
Then I administer the medication I listed and keep them quite and away from the other dogs. I usually will bring them inside the house, inorder to keep a close eye on how they are recovering etc. Swelling usually starts to go down by the second day and then I return them to their kennel. :)

Purty much what I do cept the kennel is in here.
... and yes, my carpet has fleas. :o
I think she may have tangled with a cottonmouth or rattler last time. She's been bit quite a few times over the years but this one had me worried.
She seems drivin to look for another one every time I turn her out now.

I used to have a dog, 1/2 Catahoula Curr and 1/2 somekinda crazyassed terrior. He would attack and kill any snake he came across. It didn't matter if he got bit or not. He also got run over by vehicles 7 times, cut up by javalinas once and was on the short end of too many dogfights. His name was Rufus and he loved cats. On cold nights all the cats would pile up on top of him in a big pile. He also had a weakness for chickens and would fry one up every now and then. He would attack anything I sicked him on and a bunch of stuff I didn't sick him on. He was a good dog and lived to be 12 years old. He finally got old and laid down and went to sleep one night and didn't wake up in the morning. Damn fine way to go.
