Anyone out there ever shoot one of these? I think I may want to stay away from the STI Trojan for several reasons. It's a LOT of value for the dollar, I can't deny that. There is the added cost of having Robar put their Roguard finish on it and I also would pay more for an ambi safety.

Then I live in %$%@##^^ NY City:( (don't even suggest moving, can't get the income and lifestyle I want elsewhere in the near future) where the name "Trojan" can get you cooked in court in a home defense situation or allow some
legal weasel ( I know ALL about that being an ABA-certified paralegal) to pick your carcass clean for the dirt bag's "grieving family". :p

The Para has a match trigger, barrel STAMPED "match" and target sights. I also like the idea of digging up some pre-ban 14 rounders for serious social situations.;)

I don't think that there are a lot of Para-Ordnance shooters on this forum as most of the guys seem pretty enamored with the Kimber or Springfield 1911's. I liked the idea of that double stack magazine myself so I got a Para P-12 which is two sizes smaller than the P-14 which I think duplicates the size of the military 1911 .45 ACP. In stock form it worked well enough, but it just isn't in my nature to leave well enough alone so I fixed it some more. Over the years I've added: Reverse plug guide rod, match grade bushing, polished feed ramp, long Wilson style trigger, CMC hammer and sear, Novak style Trijicon night sights, carry bevel, Ed Brown beaver tail, Navridex wood grips, Steel main spring housing, steel release button and Robar NP3 finish.

I wouldn't do the wood grips again as they split from the recoil. I've been much happier with the Hogue wrap around grips with the front finger grooves. That double stack magazine makes the grip a handful which does help with the recoil, but I think that they slimmed down the wooden grips too much and one of mine split along the grain line. The grip screws are not standard either, but I read that Para is moving to the States from Canada so maybe they will use a standard thread now.

For a personal defense pistol I think that a P-14 is toward the large size. A friend of mine wanted a pistol to pack and he shot a lot of different ones and picked an LDA Para double action 1911 style over all the others. He shot that one the best and that double action was smooth and faster than a conventional 1911. That one is worth a look too as it got some nice write ups when it came out a few years back. Shoot a few and see what you like best. Maybe they have rental guns at some of the bigger indoor ranges like they do around here.

That ambidextrous safety idea has always been lost on me. I'm right handed and my strong hand thumb only needs one safety and that is where it should be on the left hand side of the pistol. Can someone tell me why I would need a duplicate safety on the right hand side of the pistol?

Theoretically, if your strong side (right) gets incapacitated, you can then switch to the left. In doing that, it would be awkward to brush that strong side safety. Thus the ambi. Not for me though. One side will just have to suffice.
