The early antlerless season opened today. My brother and I hunted on his father-in-law's dairy farm in Sanilac County. I dropped this doe in her tracks at 114 yards just as the sun was breaking the horizon.

Looks like a good start and meat in the freezer.:)
I cannot tell from the picture, but I think I see a bolt on the gun. Is it a slug gun or rifle? I ask because of the distance of the shot and curiousity on slugs.

The gun is a custom made muzzleloader called a BP Xpress. It is made by a guy in Howell, Michigan. It uses 4 Pyrodex pellets to push a 300 grain Hornady sabot at over 2600fps. The bolt is for the primer. It takes a high powered rifle primer to generate enough heat to burn 4 pellets of powder.
The gun is advertised as being able to shoot 400 yards. I bought it to be able to reach out over the alfalfa fields. I haven't had the occasion to shoot a deer over about 130 yards though.
This property is in the shot gun/muzzleloader part of the state. Center fire rifles for deer are illegal except when using crop damage permits.

Good shooting, Bob S. Nice start to your season.
I was also able to get out on Thurs. and Fri. for the early hunt. Dropped a nice fat doe on Fri. evening. Gonna try and make it out Mon. after work.
Feels good to have some meat in the freezer early.
