View Full Version : P&Y criteria?
Not that I'm thinking I'll ever have to worry about them, but....
Is my let-off too high to qualify? It's gotta be 80 or 85%, and I was thinking that there was a restriction put in pace on that. Just toying with the idea because if my bow is ineligible anyway, it might be kinda fun to get one of those stabilizer-mounted video cameras at some point, just for S&G purposes.
Of course, if the deer/Elk were big enough for P&Y to ever be an issue, it would be a whole lot more fun still to be there with the recurve in hand instead o' the Contraption....

I'd really like to put a camera on my bow too to record the shot... even though the danged this is already heavy as lead. Cam is definitely not P&Y legal. Got a make/model in mind?

Would you put it in the book if it did net p&y?
I think p&y lightened their restrictions on letoff, but I can't recall the exact percentage number right now.
Are you talking about things that take pictures or things that snap over when the string goes thump!
The videocam is purely speculative on my part right now.... Just off the top o' my head, I've spent $300 on hunting-related stuff just gearing up for the Elk trip, replacing everything from shot-up arrows and too-heavy broadheads to worn-out socks, 15-year-old boots (which are a size too small now, anyway), 25-year-old (seriously!) woodland BDU pants, a way-too-big raincoat.... That's the difference between a bull tag and a cow tag right there!
Plus airfare....
So the video's not exactly in the budget, but between the stab mounts that will hold just about anything that can be put on a tri-pod to the 'lipstick' cams that are out there to the purpose-built models, there has got to be some way to get a ring-side seat to all the fun & games....
But with the ban on electronic devices (which I favor, actually), it might make more sense overall to go with something like a helmet-cam. Besides, those shouldn't jump at all with the shot, and that alone could disrupt the image right about the time when your arrow is striking home anyway... I dunno.. Maybe image stabilization has that pretty well covered...
Is there one that you like? The purpose-built ones might actually make the most sense if they have larger lenses, good low-light/high-speed capability and a little more optical zoom. At 30 frames/second, I've only very rearely seen a good capture of an arrow strike. Not that I'm keen on the 'splatter' aspect (not in the least!), but I'm sure a lot of tracking jobs could have worked out better had the archer known exactly where he hit.
I dunno... Part of me wants to keep the technology out of the field as much as possible, but I can also see some practical & educational apps for it in cases like this...
Dave - I don't know if I'd put a buck in a book or not, honestly. It does seem a little bit like an ego thing to do it. People talk about 'honoring the animal', but I don't buy that for a minute... I suppose if the deer in question were large enough that a lot of people would be likely to care to hear about it and I had gotten it with a tradbow, hunting on my own two feet, and doing it someplace that wasn't a suburb of something, I might put it in just to make a statement that big deer can still be taken the old way. But plunking whatever monster happens to bumble through the funnel while I'm up in a tree with the Contraption?
In that case, there would be so little sense of a Notable Accomplishment that it'd be pure self-gratification, and I'm just not that into myself....
Not that I wouldn't have the deer mounted. :D I like looking at a big dude as much as the next guy, and I've always thought that one nice specimen of each species that I've hunted would be enough for me.

You mean cameras?
I've been thinking about putting something on my bow like the Stealth Cam Compact, Ultralightweight Digital Action Camera. Weighs 3 ounces. These things seem to run about $130-$160.

Which is less than I think they're gonna paste me for at the airport tomorrow.... The damn Pelican box is bigger than I need it to be, and too big to meet the size spec for archery tackle.... and 'oversized' bags cost $175 these days.
If I can't get a little mercy at the counter, I'm looking at damn near as much for my luggage as for my freakin' plane ticket!
That's what I get for 'saving' money by using what I have instead of going out and buying something that's specifically built for a bow.....
