View Full Version : GLOCK verses SIG SAUER???

It seems as though my wife has the desire to move her CCW caliber up a notch. Ummmmmmmmm I said "You are kidding me Right" and the answer to that was "Do you see me laughing" and then I got the news.
"I want a new Sig 40 caliber pistol with a double stack magazine"!!!
So she is laying down her GLOCK 9mm Luger caliber for a Sig Sauer in the P-229 .40 cal. Now before I just jogged off to the gunstore once again. Man we have played that tune several times in the last 6 cotton pickin months. I went and got my old Sig P-229 out of moth balls for her to shoot today at the gun club.
I must say I was impressed with her progress using a handgun, she has been practicing diligently with her Glock 9mm, I got 1200 rounds of empty cases for the new 650 Dillion to reload this coming week. Now comes the practice session at the range and she flew through this like a knight in shining armor. The .40 cal in the Sig was shooting well and her double tap groups at 21 ft were less than 4 inches. Slow fire gave her a 2 inch group on that 9 inch paper pie plate.
Now comes the big surprize fella's. She picked up my Kimber 45 carry gun and proceeded to the firing line. Now at 21 ft, she shot a tighter group than with my Sig P-229 and I betcha a lot of men could not have shot those kind of groups. Looks like we are going to be purchasing another Sig pistol in 40 cal. Gents.:) :D :D :D

Best to let her finger a double stack grip to see if it fits. A wider, larger grip distributes the recoil some, but for a woman with smaller hands it might be too large. I'm envious of some of you guys with wives that like to shoot. "The dumb old gun store" aka Gander Mountain was not one of Sweetness's favorite places to shop. A new outfit and another pair of shoes would have taken the place of a Sig P-229 every time.

Bushman I gotta tell you that when it comes to shopping and shoes, those pistols of hers come 3rd place you betcha.:D :D
She likes to shoot but would never trade off the shooting days for those days of shopping in the Malls and going after those sales in the various stores.;) :D

Bill-T, now that pistol box and pistol sure look familar to me you betcha!!!
Well, I have a P-226, P-229 and P-220 in the vault but I must confess, I carry and use those GLOCKS a bunch. My G-22 is a back up nowdays, the G-29 gets more than it sure of work at the range and so does that G-20 too.
Ammo is like looking for a needle in a haystack but I have that blue XL-650 Dillion and it pumps our loaded shells like rain drops from the sky almost. In a mere 2 hours time, I can load a months worth of shooting ammo for myself. Now that is some 2000 rounds total. Great machine indeed.;) :D :D

You're right about the handgun ammo situation. It just doesn't seem to be getting any better. Especially the common semi auto handgun calibers. I was at Cabela's yesterday morning and they did have .38 Special and some .25 ACP, but that was about it. A lot of .223 and some .308. What is out there is expensive, but that isn't hurting sales in the least.
All the 9 MM pictured I purchased at Wal-Mart for $8.99 @ box. They could be selling it for a lot more, which is why they put a 6 box limit per household per day. I was talking to the manager and he said before the 6 box limit was imposed, 2 guys came in and bought all they had! One guy spent $1,200.00 the other $900.00. These were no doubt gun shop owners who put it right back on the shelf after a sizeable markup. He told me Wal-Mart has much the same problem when they put candy on sale. Vending machine owners come in and buy cases of the stuff because Wal-Mart's sale prices are cheaper than there wholesale prices. So as it turns out the small gun shop owners we're supposed to support, because big, bad, Wal-Mart is driving them out of business, are precisely the ones ripping us off. You can't win for losing. Bill-T.*****This is why I decided to go the route of getting an XL-650 Dillion reloading press and auto case feeder. I was told that some owners of this Dillion press have loaded as many as 1200 rounds per hour....Holy Cow, I said to the fellow on the phone.
He stated that most people will load at least 800 rounds per hour, after one gets accustom to sitting down at the bench and spending some time loading shells. I have close to 4,000 rds of .40cal, perhaps 3500 rds of 9mm and 5,000 rds of 45acp.
The wife went into the local gunstore, to purchase a box of 9mm-Luger for the one pistol I wanted to try out at the shooting range. We forgot to take 9mm ammo with us (each thought the other loaded up the 9mm ammo) for the one pistol I was going to shoot.
Anyway the store was almost out of 9mm ammo and only had about 20 boxes of 40cal on the shelf. She said there were only 5 boxes of 45acp ammo. So I guess things are getting tight once again in my area. Sad state of affairs for shooters really. :(

Keep yanking that press handle Hi-Ball! Mel and I just got finished full length resizing 1,000 rounds of .308. I got another 100 rounds of Lapua to go that I keep separate for my Savage 12-F/TR, and some fired stuff. But overall I'll be done in a week or so. I'm sitting on a bit over 5,000+ rounds of 9 MM, and 3,000+ of .45 ACP so I'm OK in that dept. I need to run off about 300 rounds of .300 Win. Mag. for my new Savage, and I don't even want to think about feeding my new .50 BMG! Scope, rings, bases, and all the goodies for that are on the way from Brownells and Midway. They'll get here Tuesday. I hope to have all this brass cleared up by then. I've got my work cut out for me! Bill T.

Bill-T. I had a good look over of the targets the wife shot with her new Sig P-239 today! I told her the 2 inch groups at 30 ft are great using a 40 caliber but you can NEVER give that first shot to the BAD GUY out of your weapon, no matter what the situation is period.
She had a problem on the first shot which is on a SIG, a double action 10-lb trigger pull. Then the rest of the shots are 4.5-lbs pulls.
So I had her go back to shooting the Glock-17 and the Glock-22, 9mm and 40 cal respectively. She never missed a beat with either of the Glock pistols from 10 ft, (2 inch groups) 20ft, (3 inch groups) for over a 100 rounds. Now at 30 ft, most of her shots were in the 5 inch inner circle of the target and none at 30 ft were outside the 8 inch outer circle for 50 rounds shot.
Now she can shoot 1.5 inch groups at 20 ft with that Sig P-239 from the 2nd shot to the 7th shot but can NOT hit that target on the first shot. I think today she was just a little weak in the hand or wrist perhaps......don't really know. However, I know she is going to be carrying the GLOCK as a carry gun and that is a FINAL in this house.
It is just real hard to beat a GLOCK as a CCW weapon in my eyes!:) ;)
The transition between the double action first shot to single action following shots is what earned that genre of handgun the old nickname of "crunchenticker" by gunwriters of the day when they first became more common here in the United States. It can be overcome with lots of training, kinda. But you also have to remember to decock after firing, which is something I've seen quite a few people forget to do immediately. That is a safety issue of the first order. Quite a few DA/SA semi-auto's have a long trigger reset too. Again, that is a training issue, but if you don't reset the trigger you get no "bang" when you need it. All this is why I shelved my Sig P226 .40 cal. long ago. I love the gun as far as quality and accuracy is concerned. I shot thousands of rounds through it in training to overcome those issues. I could mostly keep the first shot with the following shots, I could remember to decock the gun, but I occasionally would not reset the trigger. Try as I might that was the one thing that kept me from really being comfortable with my Sig. I packed a Glock G22 for about four years and just couldn't find happiness. I shot it quite well, but I didn't LIKE the gun. The G22's in our department also didn't live up to the hype of the drastic plastic crowd. We had plenty of malf's and small parts breakages. I moved on... I'm a died in the wool 1911 or S&W revolver guy. I'm well versed with them and completely confident with them, so be it.

MOGC----I too really am found of my old Colt and Smith & Wesson revolvers!
The CCW weapon has delt me a real fit of sorts, with the wife wanting something small and handy. However, those things are not found in a semi-auto like the Kel-Tec or Ruger simply put. I spent the money so I can talk about them I figure.
The wife has a new Sig Sauer P-239 but she can NOT hit the target on the first shot, if she does not shoot that gun at least every other day. This is a major fault to my way of thinking. She does hit the targets at 10, 21, & 35 ft with her .40cal GLOCK. The groups are not as tight in comparison to the Sig pistols she shoots but she does NOT GIVE THAT FIRST SHOT TO THE BAD GUY!!!
I really like the last little KEL-TEC I purchased but as YOU SAY, I too do not reset that trigger sometimes and the gun FAILS TO FIRE. It is also to small for my index finger to fit properly. So it is going down the road for something else.
I did purchase a GLOCK 21 SF in 45acp the other day along with a friend of mine. I am still a big believer in the 45acp over the 9mm, 38spl or .40 cal S&W. I have dispatched several animals with a .40 cal using Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point ammo and I was NOT IMPRESSED at all. I hit a 35-lb coyote, broadside in the shoulder (165grn) and it took off trotting after a short spin around. I was able to finally catch up closer to it and head shoot the critter.
