Is this the place to start trouble talking about cross bows?:)
There still seems to be a lot of controversy about whether or not to
allow cross bows to be used and during what season. More states are
allowing anybody to use them. Here in Vermont only handicapped with a
special permit are allowed to use them.
Does your state allow cross bows?

Yep, this is the place. Georgia waved the white flag a few years ago and opened the archery season to include any and all types of bows. Before that we had the same system as Vermont where you needed a physican's approval to use a crossbow. Unfortunately that system was badly abused, I know of one guy who is perfectly healthy but he knew a physican and got the necessary paperwork.

My opinion? I have grown to accept them but still don't like them. I am a traditionalist but the lines seperating all the bows have grown blurry, and condemning one type of bow is a very slippery slope.

NCB, good to see you back. That's a cute kid you got there, son or grandson?

You know what left-handed means, right? He can't use hand-me-down equipment and you will have to buy all new stuff!

Found my way back, I guess.....

As to the X-Bows....

JMO, they've become a necessary evil, though I don't think they should be permitted in the general archery season...

Let me explain a bit....

Necessary Evil:

Because there are lots of places where firearms are not permitted and where the owners might be open to bowhunting if they had a relationship with a bowhunter. But they don't, so thier property remains a de facto sanctuary. If Xbows become permitted to any and all hunters who care to use them, then maybe a few guys would take them up in order to get access to ther friends' bow-huntable land. And in a lot of places, with herds critically oversized, we need all the tags punched that we can get.

But they still aren't 'bows'--they're a cat of some other stripe... So I say let anybody with a bowhunter ed certificate use one during the regular firearms season and in any bowhunting season(s) occurring after the peak rut period.

That leaves 'archery' season open for bows that conform to a stricter definition of archery gear, keeps the harvest a shade lower than it might otherwise be (with unrestricted Xbow usage) and will maybe-just-maybe-we-can-only-hope keep the gunners from shutting archery seasons down altogether by sheer weight of numbers... Who knows, maybe even we'd see some of the more casual bowhunters quitting the early season... And that woldn't be entirely bad.

Trouble is, the tech has made bowhunting so 'accessible' to so many that instead of being a fringe sport by which a few nut-jobs take a few deer here and there, there are now a bunch of gunnies who feel as though the bowmen are shooting 'their' deer-- skimming off the good bucks and leaving the firearms season with only the dregs. So anything we can do to shift the bowhunting pressure later in the year would help keep the gunnies happy.

Apart from those who won't be happy with anything short of one big season (OBS).
