Sure enough, he's never gonna be happy with any bear he sees the rest of his life.
They will all seem way too small.
Can just imagine trying to get that one out of the woods, let alone loading it on a truck.

World record ???
The world record weight for an American black bear is 880 pounds. This was the recorded weight of a 10.75 year-old male bear shot in North Carolina in November 1998.
A black bear was hit and killed by a car near Winnipeg Canada, in 2001. The official recorded weight was 856.5 pounds, but it is estimated that the live weight of this large male was more than 886 pounds. The driver was not injured and there appeared to be little damage to the Mazda.
An 805-pound male American black bear was shot in Manitoba Canada, and in Pennsylvania males fairly consistently reach the record weight of 800+ pounds.

greenjeans,
you're right, but every hunter I ever knew wanted "Fat Albert" or "Big Bubba" to walk in on his bait, not something shaped like munchkin from Wizard of Oz.
Most articles of Big Bears are about the weight of the bear, then it's comparative size, as in how much of the bed of the pick-up he occupied.:D
World record, or county record, that was a big bear.
Any one who doubts that?
Try sharing a tree stand with him for a few long minutes.

To the average non-bear hunter the weight does mean more than a skull size measurement. That said it is hard for me to believe that a guy wouldn't want to field dress a big bear just to get them out of the woods. We were dealing with black bears less than half that size and they were a chore to get out of the woods. Ours always went down into a swamp or thick area where no 4-wheeler was going to be able to get to them. Then too it aids in cooling down the carcass faster for better meat.

:DAlways take the stand on the high ground when you have a choice-They role down hill like a greased jelly fish.
If they are interested in meat....that's not very often.
Myself, I think it's the best. Chops on the grill are hard to beat.

Once in 2000 I went to Sak. Canada to dispatch blackbear that was thought to be 800 lbs plus, yes I do mean 800 lbs. However, the outfitter lied to us and this bear was shot by a man who did not know squat about hunting and nothing about bears in general.
The man shot the bear while starting his climb down from the tree stand that he had been in all afternoon etc. It was dark at the time but the bear whoofed him standing up on it's hind feet near the ladder and he got scared and pulled the trigger. Blood was found the next day but no bear!!!
This was really a sorry thing to have happen to such a great bear but that is another story. I can say that I put my boot into the rear tracks of this bear and it was the biggest bear print I have ever come across while on a hunt. I saw what this bear did to a 55 gallon steel drum, that was chained to a 15 inch diameter tree. The bear ripped the chain through the steel barrel, then pushed it 100 yards through the willows that were so thick, a human could barely claw their way through them.

I also like to shoot the big heavy bears with a nice dark coat. Hi Ball now how much money was that guide going to charge you for the 800 pound monster?

Greenjeans, that hunt went for $1,500 dollars per man that year but I told the guy I would not come by myself. So he let me bring a buddy and the both of us hunted the same bear in that secluded area.
The only problem was, that the outfitter LIED about the bear and it had been shot by someone else some 2 weeks prior and no one found that bear. It was hit with a 45/70 at point blank range. It is possible that the bear survived but I think it just went off in the woods and died.:(

I would hate to know the amount of black bears that are injured every year due to improper shots cause its just to dark out to properly shoot the bear or there lack of knowledge of where to shoot a bear an animal that is thick skinned with a heavy lair of fat and big tough shoulders. A little bit of studying the bears vital area's and their shoulder layout and how it all looks at the different angles would be a huge andvantage to most bear hunters especially the archery ones.
Knowing that and then you have an animal that you almose have to put down a quick kill cause all the fat and thick hair will quickly close up and them bears hardly ever give a good blood trail the further the worse it gets.
