I picked up a CZ 458 LOTT and a 540 grain MOULD at a decent price from a friend in like new condition, (only three factory rounds fired before he decided he likes his 450 marlin MUCH BETTER)
he tried MY 450 marlin and loved the caliber
but hes more a bolt action type guy rather than a single shot/lever guy like myself, and he found a CZ 458 bolt action at a decent price, he owned it for time it took him to make one trip to the range, and a phone call to me

time will tell but that looks like a fun cast bullet combo, now IM not about to push it to its potential, but a hard cast 540 grain bullet at lets say 1600-1900fps ought to be adequate for most hunts in the timber

anyone got good loads

BTW I talked to my local gunsmith, who I dealt with for 40 plus years, hes always maintained that the 375H&H and larger calibers on the used market are frequently in great shape as they don,t get shot a great deal, and frequently get traded or sold, he joked about the 458 ruger #1 rifles remind him of homing pigeons, they keep returning on consignment, to his shop, like that's where they feel at home

Have fun with your CZ 550 in .458 Lott! Its a great rifle and cartridge.

I often played around with a friend's CZ 550 in .458 Winchester Mag and found it to be a great rifle, although a bit too bulky for me. I killed a couple of asiatic buffs with that rifle and 450 grain Barnes X-Bullets.

All said, I do think that I prefer the 9.3x62 in the CZ 550, but this is mainly because that model fits me much better and is easier to pack around all day long.

Your comment about the .458 Winchester in a Ruger No.1 brings back a lot of memories. My first No.1 (20 years ago, or so) was a .458 Winchester and I really liked that little beast, although it did pound the shoulder, and on occasion, chip the teeth. ;)

in .458 Mag!!! The butt was too narrow, the gun was too light and it was a PIG with full power loads. I had a Custom Mauser in .375 H&H and that was a JOY to shoot!! Never flinched once. I had a livid bruise for about ten days from the Ruger!! Even my late Uncle's old .416 Rigby had better manners than the Ruger.

those RUGER #1 rifles are real nice , short, handy and accurate,Ive owned several, the best ones were a 257 Roberts, and a 270 win for deer, and a 338 win , and 375 H&H chamberings, for ELK.
the 257 Roberts and 270 was superbly accurate with a 100 grain speer and a load of h414,the 270,with 150 speer and 55 grains of IMR 4831 , not especially fast, but well under 1" hundred yard bench rest groups were common, from both.
the 338 & 375 were accurate enough (under 1.5" groups) but not exceptionable, in accuracy
but if your into single shots they were nice hunting rifles, but the best single shots Ive owned were browning 78s, they were only 1"-1.2" rifles (caliber 300 wby mag, shillen rebarrel jobs)but they handle very smoothly. and look great and point naturally, Ive killed deer with my 78s almost as a snap shot response at ranges that I don,t normally even think seriously about shooting

I had a No.1 in .416 Rigby for a short time too. I liked it but found it expensive to feed at the time (both brass and loaded ammo was quite pricey then -- don't imagine it's much different now). It was much more of a pussycat than was the .458 with stout loads. But, yes, they would both muddy up the shoulder after a dozen or so rounds.

I've never owned one, but have shot a couple and liked them. They are indeed a classy rifle.
