Last weekend I returned home after a weeklong guided black bear hunt over bait in Maine. Bob and Andrea Howe, the owners of PINE (www.pinegrovelodge.com) GROVE LODGE, donated the disabled hunt as a part of their PINE (www.pinegroveprogram.com) GROVE PROGRAM. Considering all the other activities available there, this Bed & Breakfast is more than just a getaway for the hunter in the family. It is truly a four-season outdoor adventure destination as advertised.
Although the Howes took over the lodge just over a decade ago, Bob has been a registered Maine Master Guide for 35 years and is considered by some as the best guide in the state. He might disagree by stating that distinction goes to either his brother Steve or his son Heath who are heavily involved in the business. Andrea dishes up three home-cooked meals a day for her guests and will accept requests for special entrees or desserts. Only some of her other duties include the bookings and online information updates. Sadly I am not proficient behind a camera, yet I did take these photos (http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/nystr8shooter/Maine%20Black%20Bear%20Hunt/) to share; others may be found at the site.
I would like to acknowledge a message from a guest who also attended last week’s hunt. Jack Caffey Jr. is a NY volunteer for HOPE (www.hopeforthewarriors.org) FOR THE WARRIORS, an organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for U.S. Service Members and their families nationwide who have been adversely affected by injuries or death in the line of duty. As an activist of greater access to the outdoors for all people with disabilities, it is my pleasure to pass on their names to all sportsmen and families whether they are able-bodied or deal with physical limitations as do I. Mere words cannot express my appreciation to Bob and Andrea for their generosity and hospitality. Special thanks also to Don (www.afarcry.info) Christensen and to Kyle Scanlon, Editor of OUTDOORS (www.outdoorsmagazine.net) MAGAZINE for their involvement in making this trip possible.
