Well ive havent posted much here, kind of been just lurking reading up, and what not. Well, I decided this year im retiring my old 308, it no longer can hold a realible group, and I dont like shooting deer unless im positive my rifle, and myself are capable of doing it quickly, and humanly. I purchased a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, and im very happy with it. I dont think ive ever held another rifle that fits me as well as this one. I scoped it with a Bushnell Trophy DOA. Its a 3-9x40. I was thinkin bout droppin the extra cash on another scope and getting the 4-12x40 but the 3-9 will do me well. The fartherest shot I can take in my huntin location is 250-275 yards. I hunted a few other properties that you can shoot out to 400 yards, but im still confident in the 3-9. Im going to be runing Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips out of it, 150gr. I have high hopes for this rifle as far as accuracy, as ive heard from more than a handfull that the m77 hawkeye is pretty accurate. Anyone else shooting the M77? Whats your thoughts on it? Only thing that kind of turns me off is the scope rings, but they are fine for any scope that will sit on this rifle.

Perry, welcome off the lurker list. I assume that you bought another .308 in the Hawkeye. I have not fingered one of those yet myself, but I did build up a 7mm-08 on a M77 MkII action that I like. How are the two different? I started a thread about those Ruger rings myself in the Optics area. Not bad rings, its just that there are not many other choices. On the MkII action the only thing that I found objectionable was the noise of the safety if you just push it off. It put an 8 pointer into launch mode and made what would have been an easy shot into a harder one. I've since learned to put my thumb over the top of the safety and ease it forward for no noise which has solved that problem.

Actually I went with a 30-06, I considered the 308 again, but in 2010 or 2011 I will be going on a guided elk hunt, so thats why I chose the 30-06. I have several other rifles that have plenty to knock over deer 243, 257, 30-30, 270 win and wsm, but I like to have one rifle designated for deer. Ive taken the others out, but I try to stick to just one, as we all know sometimes the rifles get knocked around. The hawkeye safety is loud as well, but like you said, if you hold it with two fingers you can cut the noise down, alot. I may end up going to a different bullet next year, some buddies say the ballistic silvertip in 30-06 PUNCHES holes threw em, but we will see.

Perry, I had an old model 54 Winchester in .270 that began to lose its accuracy. I had a gunsmith cut an inch off the end of the barrel and recrown it. It shot very well after the work was completed.
