Remember the John Deere mower in the Temper Tantrum post ? It is at John Deere right now. I decided not to sledge hammer it. Turns out, ethanol is the culprit. They said many have been coming in with the same problem . My carberator is going to be rebuilt, and they are draining my gas and putting in new gas with a special, new stabilizer out to combat ethanol problems.

I found the stuff at Wal Mart. Look for the words on the label " For E-10 ethanol treatment."

I don't use ethanol in any of my small engines or gas tractor.

Are you in one of those urban areas that dictate ethanol usage? If not why are you burning it?

Ethanol is particularly hard on small engines that don't get used often. Garden tillers are a good example. The gas will start corroding the inside of the carburetor and there is no amount of cleaning that will fix it once it starts. Cleaning the fuel tank, new gas lines and a new carburetor is about the only way to fix them a lot of times. Actually once the carb starts to corrode replacement is the only lasting fix. If you see white crusty stuff in there it's over.

If I find a station that does not have it, I will cater that station exclusively. We cannot seem to find a station that has not gone Eth, even all name brands.

Here's what I use, I buy the 32oz bottles by the case and use it in EVERYTHING...

Marine Formula STA-BIL
•America's #1 Selling Marine Fuel Additive Brand!
•BEST Ethanol Problem Fighter
•More than FOUR TIMES the Fuel System Cleaner than in Regular STA-BIL
•DOUBLE the corrosion preventer than in Regular STA-BIL
•Prevents corrosion from moisture & ethanol-induced water attraction
•Improves marine engine performance YEAR-ROUND, not just for seasonal storage

So many people are using it now that it's sometimes hard to find. That's why I get it for the best price I can find at the time, and order a case over the internet.
It's expensive, but it has More than FOUR TIMES the Fuel System Cleaner than in Regular STA-BIL, and treats twice as much gas per ounce of Sta-bil.
AND it's a lot cheaper than a new carb !

So chalk up another added expense to the use of ethanol. Not only the use of food as fuel, cost of production, destruction of machinery, repair of machinery, but now added costs to produce additives that reduce it's destructive effects.

What we really need is the "Orkin Man" to do a roach treatment on the U.S. Capitol building and get rid of all the vermin running loose there.

I am looking forward to the 2010 elections.

Sounds like you live in one of the EPA mandated ethanol zones. I know for about 50 miles in a circle from Houston that ethanol gas is the only one legally sold. I gas up before I enter the zone and that ussually lasts me until I leave it. When I have to by it I get just enough to get back out and have less than a 1/4 tank. As soon as I hit regular gasoline again I stop and top off to dilute it.

And they want to add more...

The Detroit News reports, "A push by corn-producing states and alternative fuel proponents to increase federal rules boosting the amount of ethanol mixed into gasoline is being fought by automakers because it would be costly and could damage engines." The News adds, "By Dec. 1, the Environmental Protection Agency must decide whether to approve a request to increase the amount of ethanol that can be mixed with most gasoline sold at pumps to as much as 15 percent."

Most gasoline sold in the U.S. is already a blend of up to 10 percent ethanol. Increasing the amount of ethanol in the mix could damage engines that weren't designed to run on the plant-based fuel. The Baltimore Sun reports that earlier this month, "an unusually high concentration of ethanol in the city's gasoline supply contributed to the breakdown of more than 70 police cars."

My mom lived in the Milwaukee suburbs and always had problems with their lawn tractor and other small engines. I was talking to the John Deere dealer there and he said that 90% of their engine repair work is fuel related to the crappy gasoline mandated for that area. He said that he personally gets his gas out of the area and brings in home in containers for his small engines.

Lots of the premium gas up here does not have ethanol blended into it, so I use that in my small engines.

Yes I did a search and a local rod & reel forum had a big list of stations with pure gas, for their outboards. So, I know where to go now. I am just becoming aware of this phenomenom.
