[Using best Jerry Seinfeld voice] So what's the deal with chrome vanadium? Is it chrome or is it vanadium? And why does Case use it? And for that matter, why do they call themselves Case? They make knives, not cases... [Jerry Seinfeld voice off]
Anyway what's the deal with CV? It's not a traditional carbon steel, right? It seems that it's more of a cross between carbon steel and stainless. Does anyone have any insights they can offer?

Case's chrome vanadium blades are very good and one of my favorites for ease of sharpening to a wicked sharp edge and their ability to hold that edge for a long time. It's not anywhere near stainless and rusts/ stains just like any other carbon steel. The chrome content is too low to prevent rusting. The chrome and Vanadium are added to give the steel a finer grain structure which improves it's edge holding qualities.

Check out the data sheets
These guys don't list all the tool steels... actually I've yet to find a knife that would hold an edge better than a chris reeve one piece knife make from A2 tool steel... when a knife will gut and quarter out a moose and still the WORKING EDGE will shave hair off (without being touched up) of your arm thats pretty damn amazing and no i wouldn't believe it either unless i saw if first hand!

Sabre, will do on the CV steel.
Swamp, I believe you regarding the D2 tool steel. I just think that once it did get dull I'd never be able to resharpen it.
