A bowhunter got him on Camp Ripley - which is a place to which all of us bowhunters owe a debt, because of the bowhunting wounding rate study there that has become the last word on the subject. Antis still argue about the way it was structured (after anti-hunting groups were invited, but declined the opportunity to assist with the funding or planning of the the operation!), but the researchers overflew the area every night in Helos using FLIR & night vision to find any unrecovered or unreported animals, and the bottom line was that bowhunters don't wound & lose any more animals than gunners do.
Anyway, here's the deer - truly unusual brow tines.. makes me wish for a few more angles on him

Now that is a real "Hoss". Those northern deer look so different than these deer of the southwest that they look like a totally different species. Those are the linemen of the deer world while ours are the wide receiver...! Thanks for the picture.
Actually, for up there, it's pretty surprising to me that this one dressed out under #200. Just under, but a buddy of mine shot what was very probably a younger animal, farther to the north, and that dude broke 230 after hanging for 5 days in a very cold, very dry wind.
Now that guy could play front line in any league!
Most of the bucks we took up in MN dressed at around 185 - all but the 1.5s, really - so #200's nothing really magical. Out here, bucks 2.5 YO and larger average about 150 and the 1.5s about 110, so I kinda feel like most of the deer I see are not just wide-receivers, but rookies, too! ;)
Our fawns were running about #60 last year, though, which may be about the size of a mature doe in some quarters....

They aren't a different species, but they ARE a different sub-species. I think I remember Leonard Lee Rue III saying that there are 7 different sub-species of whitetail deer and since then, I've heard that there could be even more than that. He said in his seminar that the Midwest bucks are the same sub-species as the Canadian Provence's and have the potential to grow the largest antlers.

Actually there are 38 recognized sub-species of the white-tailed deer. If anyone is interested in seeing all of them and their respective locations, go to my website, look on the left side and scroll down to "Deer Species" and you will find a map and listing.

Here are a few different angles.

Scott O’Konek, 29, from South Haven, MN participated in the Camp Ripley’s annual two-day archery hunt. He tagged a 32-point buck on the first day, October 15, 2009. The buck was estimated to be a five years old with a field-dress of 192 pounds and a preliminary antler score of 228.
The current archery antler score record is 225 dating back to 1989. If O’Konek’s buck’s measurement holds true, after the conclusive score is taken when the antlers have dried, then it will be the state’s largest archery killed nontypical/asymmetrical rack. - photo submitted by Nikki Shoutz, MN DNR

Just me bein' me....
I sure don't care to see an animal laid in the mud when there's plenty of grass around. Why in the unprintable would you treat your food that way?
And that 'rodeo' shot at the end there. That just turns my guts all the wrong way.

Agreed 100%!!! It is such a beautiful animal it just seems disrespectful to display it in that manner. And it IS a hog for sure, what a monster!
Now THAT is a heavy, heavy buck!
Any clue what that one went dressed out?

No clue on this particular buck but the largest taken this year weighed in at 265 pounds.
