I have a new fully equipped Smith and Wesson M&P AR-15 that I might trade for a Weatherby Lazermark in 300 Mag with no scope and no muzzle break. The 300 has only had 8 shots through it and looks as new. I don't have any experience with Weatherbys other than knowing the ammo is expensive and they kick like mules from what my cousins tell me. Would you make that trade? I have no need for my AR, but don't really have a need for a 300 Weatherby Mag in Texas. My 243, 270, 308 etc do just fine, but I have always wanted to try out a Weatherby. Would welcome your opinions.
The trade will also include several boxes of 300 ammo.

Welcome off the lurker list. Actually with as nuts as lots of people are about that AR platform, I think that would be an easier rifle to sell than a .300 Wby. Mag. would be. My son got a good deal on a Vanguard Weatherby in the .300 Wby. and it is too much gun for around here for sure. I've seen .300 Wby. ammo with premium bullets priced at $100. a box. That could come down a bunch if you handload, but I would say that unless you have a moose, elk or bear hunt planned, not much even in Texas needs a .300 Wby. Mag. shot at it. If you want to try one I would find one to try before I owned one to try. I still remember the look on my kid's face when he touched off that first round at the bench. Without saying a word that expression was saying "What have I done to myself and I've still got to sight this thing in and everyone is watching."

just some info, you can handload 300 wby ammo for far less than you can buy it loaded, but if your buying a wby rifle ID suggest the FIBERMARK synthetic stock versions a nicer hunting rifle as its far less flashy, and less effected by normal wear & tear,, or order a second fiberglass stock for hunting and display the flash wood stock, a decent shoulder pad , and proper sling use makes a huge difference at the range also

That's a great story. I remember the first time I fired a 30.06 and the scope made a nice half circle gash between my eyes. the guy in the lane next to me nudged his son and pointed to me as if saying "don't let that happen to you."
I agree with the lack of game in TX requiring a 300 Wby mag or any 300 mag for that matter.

my uncle says Weatherbys don't really shoot their best unless you handload. He also says the recoil of Weatherby 300 mags is much more severe than 300 win mags or even the 300 RUM.

Ive always hand loaded for my wby rifles as the cost of factory loads is insane, I can,t see any use for most of the common cup/core bullet designs under about 165 grains in the 300 mags as they tend to detonate on impact rather than penetrate, at close range,I have loaded several bullets for other guys in camp and watched the results, (instant kills on deer, even elk,but not much in the way of meat near the impact point) but the hornady 190 gr and speer 200 grain are proven performers in my 300 wby rifles
