she hide the ground right at 0 dark 30. With a high back shot I took out her spine at 10 yards. I took out my new 14 yo hunting buddy, he was a kid in my wifes class last year. He said either you or I will shoot one tonight. Kid got the tractor and is a big help to this old man. Now that my son's are gone. :)

O yes I was waring my luck hat for the 1st time

That is a sharp pic.

Everybody should have a lucky hat.

Hey DaveT - your hat's so old, the picture's busted! :D

So Hawk - is that your Professional Deer Controller résumé photo? I don't have any shots of me that are professionally done....

I used to have a lucky hat, but I think it bit the dust. Things get looking 'lucky' enough, and the Missus has a habit of mistaking them for worn out, useless and potentially contaminated junk.

I think I'm about due for a new one, but I might just plow the $$ into a second hang-on and hope one of my other hats gets onto a streak :D

Oh, and Hawk - is that just stray blood on the right foreleg, or is that an exit?

GF you can see the entrence hole high back about my shoulder high.

A friend is a pro photographer and one day I was in his shop and he was fiddling with a new camera and said have a set. Good man, We do a little swamping of work with each other.

BTW you can have a Hat like mine from Bass Pro. It was brown but now a forest green. Nice warm felt hat.

It was brown but now a forest green.

Did you dye it, or...?? A good felt crusher is a good deal. I think they make 'em in camo these days, too, but funny thing... Deer are a lot bigger than any hat and pretty damn hard to see, too....and I've never seen a Camo-print deer.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Nice looking doe Dave.

Is that an excaliber crossbow you're using?
A few years ago when I went looking for my first crossbow
I thought I'd get an excaliber but ended up with a ten point.
No regrets.

And by the way, Dave...

Do you have a dressed weight on that one? She looks like she's in her prime yet - not some craggy old nanny - and I'm just kinda curious how big they run down there...

One year I shot what seemed like a 'big' doe for around here, and I think she went 140 all-up. Don't recall what the dressed weight was, though. Probably about 100, which is just about on par with a 1.5 YO buck here, according to the DEP survey data from the check stations... My weighing technique's not real precise, though - I hang 'em up, then get the scale underneath and try to get the weight off of the rope.

And while I'm at it... You said a spine shot at short range... So did the arrow pass through to vitals, or was it more of a 'knock her down, then finish her off' thing? It looks like one of those angles that could very well do both jobs at once....

And if fit makes you feel any better, 'old man' ( :D ), I think I've got at least as much grey on my chin as you do (and more on the sides, which is why the cheeks stay shaven year-round!), but maybe your buddy helped you out a little bit in the retouching department ;)

GF only gray is on the chin and maby a few in the ears LOL My Dad still has a full head of Black hair at 79.

She dressed about 120 I have taken a doe that dressed 160 a lot in the 130'2 range. But I prefer yearling LOL

I clipped the lower spine and hit both lungs. She was one of the smart ladys in the area, reason for shooting her and not her fawn which was about a 60-70 pounder.

That's a perfect shot on a very nice deer, Brother! I don't mind having 'em running a little ways on me, because still have plenty to learn about trailing; but especially in those tighter areas, you just can't beat DRT:cool:

Nice one for sure.

Good job Dave.

BTW, was it the lucky hat or the lucky Excalibur? LOL

Maybe a little of both mostly experience. LOL So close to dark I went for the drop shot.

Drop shot?

Aiming low expecting it to drop? If it doesn't you just get a sweet heart shot.

I think he took the spine intentionally to get her to drop in place. Not a bad idea when it's getting late, I suppose, and especially at 10 yards where there's not much she can do to dodge a crossbow bolt.

This one was dead just about as fast as a blade will allow, I'd guess, and no chance of a long recovery process. Not even an Anti can fault that one, other than just on general principles...

Got that right GF. I usually will not take spine shots if there not nessary. But late evening and the shot is offered, I'll take it.
