Well, yesterday I purchased a new Savage in a 17 rim fire caliber with fiberglass stock. No iron sights but nowdays I can't hardly use those anyway. I installed a Bushnell 4 x 12 scope to do my biding. The cost of shells are a dollar more than the .22WMR but no big deal as the .22WMR has a velocity of 1875fps, this new Savage 17 goes out the barrel at 2600fps. It sure does a great job on all those squirrels that seem to want in my house lately.

Some people tell me that they hunt and kill coyotes with the little caliber but I don't believe I am going to do so or even try. I'll stick to my .222 Remy and .243 Winchester model 70. No question in my mind, what they can or cannot do on Mr. Coyote in the woods or fields. Now does anybody else shoot one of these little calibers?:):D

I'd like the have a 17 HMR someday... it would be a Marilin from what i've handled so far... I think the 17 HMR is on the light side for a serious coyote cartridge... should be great for woodchucks, prarie dogs, etc

I`ve a CZ 452FS in 17HMR and love it.
The 17 is a great little round, very accurate, very fast and no recoil.

I have a CZ 17 and love to shoot it. The 17 is accurate in any brand of rifle, so you can't go wrong in that department. As far as speed goes it will beat the 22 mag with the old weight bullets, but check out the new lighter mags with "V-max" bullets. They are just a about 150fps slower but are shooting heavier bullets than you can get with any 17 ammo. Don't throw away the 22 mag yet, they still have a place.

i've seen most makes and i think the marlin beats them all... unless of course you get an anchutz

In the accuracy department....I'll put my Savage .17 HMR against any Marlin any day:D

I've had one since shortly after they came out. It is very accurate {Marlin} but not terribly useful to me. It's too destructive for edible small game like squirrel and rabbit. For those you are much better off with a .22 LR. Not poweful enough to be consistently effective on larger varmints like coyotes. For those you are much better off with a centerfire. I have found it to be a damn fine 175 yard crow rifle and that's about it. Should be good for prarie dogs but we don't have any of those hereabouts. Mine's been collecting a lot of dust here lately and that's about it.

Out here the .17s have made a name for themselves on Jacks, PDogs and Ground Squirrels. It's too light for coyotes in my opinion but we do have one fellow that loves it for that as he gets entrance but no exit or so he claims.
