How do I get rid of it? Is there anything I can soak the stainless steel barrel in? Thanks, Alan

I use a 50-cal wire brush and Hoppes powder solvent... not the kind that eats copper. Basically I soak the crud-ring in the bore by getting it very wet with Hoppes #9, let it set for a few minutes, and then take the brush to it.

I shot a lot of Blackhorn powder this summer, and it's cleaner than T7 and leaves no crud ring. You might give it a try.

Thanks Twanger; Actually I bought a new CVA and because of the crud ring in my older in-line , all I'm shooting in it is BH-209. I want to gt rid of it before I give it to my son.

I gave up. I soaked the breech end and scrubbed with Hoppes 3X. If the barrel was standard blued it would likely be hard to see, but with the SS barrel it's still there. It doesn't hurt anythng so I'll just let it go. Nothing but BH-209 from now on in all my B/P guns.

Soapy water or Rusty Duck BP cleaner soaked into a patch always works for me. You don't need to use smokeless powder cleaners on BP guns.

I have had great results using the Mr. Clean product, green bottle with "febreeze". Sounds funny but it's worth a try. I never have to use any form of brush. I also have only used Pyrodex and black powder though.

Crud ring finally gone! I used Forrest bore cleaning foam and let it sit over crud for 15 minutes or so followed by wire brush X 3.

A couple of thoughts to share with you assuming you are using T7 powder.

Probably the best and easiest product to melt and clean T7 with is straight old regular blue Windex... I pre-make patches just for this project. The patch I take to the range is barely moist and I use the same patch over and over again.

The patch I use for cleaning at home is made the same way only it is wet. It usually takes 3/4 patches at home to get the barrel almost clean.

Hoppes is not a good product to clean T7 with, it is great on Nitro powder but T7 is a sugar based powder....

And speaking of that - that is probably what is causing your 'crud ring' If you use to hot a primer it adds to the cystalization of the burnt powder. Plus I believe a large part of the problem is a reaction with the type of bore oil you may be using.

It would be my suggestion that you try to find a synthetic product like Slip 2000 or Montana X-treme Bore Conditioner. If you go this route you will need to really clean all existing oil out of your bore including what is in the pores. I usually use boiling water for this + as an added advantage it strips any plastic fouling that may be accumuating.

Just sharing some thoughts...

Thanks for sharing Sabotloader. In this particular rifle, I was using musket caps, lead conicals with bore button, & 90 grains T7. I think I'm done with T7 for good and wanted to remove crud ring for sale of rifle or gift to son.
