Taken in the Deerlodge area at 7000ft with Marlin .444 using factory sights. The Buffalo Bore 335 grain cast bullet made two large entry and two large exit wounds at 100 yards or so. It ran uphill and arched left toward me and I anchored him uphill at 20 paces. The last penetrated the top of his heart and exited to pass through the left front leg joint. The first bullet severed the main artery running under his spine. Meat good to the hole.

ITs nice to see someone ELSE occasionally using a heavier caliber lever action to hunt ELK, those rifles do an excellent job in skilled hands as youve obviously demonstrated, while I use my 340wby, and 375 H&H carbine more often , If Ive decided to hunt the thicker stuff one of my BLRs gets grabbed frequently, and Ive always really preferred the lever guns and single shot falling blocks, as they just seem to feel better in my hands, and the older I get the more frequently I seem to grab a BLR.

This was my fourth hunt in the area, I have really been on my feet sun-up to sun-set many days for years. When I saw this bull, I thought to myself what a creature and I reminded myself before shooting that I had a responsibility to do it right. After gutting it, I dragged that elk almost a half mile, it took me about three and a half hours, I felt privileged. Thought as long as someone was kind enough to photograph my labor so thoughtfully that I should share it. Thanks for the congratulatory comments.

Congrats! I've used the Buffalo Bore ammunition in 45-70 to take a few animals ranging from wild boar to water buffalo and I really like the stuff. Although the 45-70 is not exactly my 'go to rifle', it is sure fun to hunt with and certainly still gets the job done with style.

Enjoy your elk steaks!

Yup, Congrats on the bull and also the way you took him too. I haven't been able to use factory sights since I was....well, younger anyway!!:)

T2133, if that elk is the size of my 5x6 elk that you are dragging by yourself at 7,000 ft., you are some kind of an animal yourself! I'm never going to complain about dragging a deer at 500 ft. again. Congratulations.

I just got these back after almost a year. Have a friend who will show me how to make it stick to the wall permanent while the spouse is shopping:)

Nice looking mount, but just remember to keep them high up on a wall or behind a table or something that will be a barrier to keep people from walking into them or your elk will get the last laugh. They don't call those lower points "daggers" for no reason.

They'll be up at least 10', thanks for the good advise. The friend who took that first photo was leary of taking that down the slope because he had heard stories like you allude to. My BIL is a boot maker he provided the green leather for the mount, wish I could get a better picture so you guys could see it better.
