Conman's place is right beside the Pungo NWR where bears are protected. There are agricultural fields in the area and Mike buys the corn, standing in the field. He then leaves it unpicked just for the bears and other game. Makes his land primo supreme for wildlife.

NC has some of the most questionable baiting laws of anyplace I know of. One can hunt deer over bait but not bear. no no. A bear coming to a deer cornpile cannot be shot, yet it's completely legal to turn bear hounds loose at the bait pile.

tip, if you kill a bear in NC, upon registration be prepared for a visit from the wardens wanting to visit the kill site and discern there has been no bait within x number of yards. ... unless dogs were used.

Mike is completely legit btw. He doesn't bait bear. He doesn't have to with the ag fields around. :)

I guess it was 15 years ago or so that Craig Boddington made several hunts in your area writing of them. He touted them as the best place in North America for really big black bears.

When I was here in the mid 70s the place to go was the mountains for a combined bear and boar dog hunt. Then the bears were not particularly large. I gather there are few ther now and the Coast is the place to go.

Oh the mountains have plenty of bears but the coast has more and bigger.

That helps to explain it then.
Sounds as if they have baiting regulations as bad as our fishing laws in this state.
(laws and limmits & etc. change by what mile you are at on any given stream)
