If you ever shoot a really big one, make sure you've got witnesses...

If the taxidermist said it looked like a broadhead wound, I doubt it was a poached/gun killed deer. The taxidermist has more to lose than the guy who killed the deer if it was poached.
I can see where the taxidermist would be on trouble if he were in cahoots with a poacher, but shouldn't he be pretty well protected otherwise?
I doubt the taxidermist ever saw the carcass, and I'm sure that that's long gone by now... it would be awfully easy to bring in the cape with a post-mortem arrow hole in it, though, so unless someone can look at the cape and say 'yes, this looks like an animal that was alive when this wound was made', it could be very hard to sort out. But even then, if you're willing to stoop low enough to poach a 'trophy' deer in the first place, you could probably figure a way around that kind of examination.... :(
Somewhere, I ran across a Jim Shockey article with a long & painful-looking list of to-do's for anyone who thinks he's shot a record-sized buck. It sounded like such a PITA that I might just rather keep my big mouth shut.... From the sound of it, if you're not hunting with a Conservation Officer, a Priest and three choir boys in tow, you're gonna have one hell of a road ahead of you just to prove your own innocence of any violations...:eek:

Yep, if i ever killed a record buck, id treat it just like any other, boil it, bleech it, stick it to some polished cherry, and be done with it.

There must be something left out of this article, because I see no evidence presented that it was shot illegally.

Based on the article, it sounded to me as if "poaching" might be the crucial word. Perhaps the deer was seen and or photographed in a location where only a poacher would have access and the real question isn't how it was dispatched. I'm sure we will find out before long since it is tough to keep a secret these easy communication days.
Shooter admitted his misdeeds....
