why are YOU so dependent on your WEATHERBY RIFLE
now let me point out I really like my weatherby 340 and 378 rifles and do about 80% or more of my ELK hunting with a fibermark 340 weatherby.
ive had a 257 weatherby Ive used for mule deer, and its an excellent rifle also,
I love the results, the accuracy is great, I would not change much, and the 378 wby is probably one of the few rifles I would trust to hunt dangerous game with, and If your only going to have one or two ELK rifles Id strongly suggest a 300-340 weatherby fibermark as potentially one of the best on the market, but in my opinion its a darn fine TOOL that DEPENDABLY gets the job done, but its NOT something that's vastly superior to everything ELSE that's available, maybe its because I look at it as a TOOL not an art object, and I like the utility of the fibermark, not the flashy wood stocks, its a darn fine rifle, its a bit expensive but a good value and its given me excellent service for many years, so much so that when my sons got old enough to hunt I bought THEM 340 weatherbys.
but I talk to some guys, in the field or at the range and they either HATE or LOVE WEATHERBY rifles, its almost, like a religious choice, and they seem to have almost a religious conviction either for or against the brand while other brands don,t seem to evoke the same response, and after talking to many of the detractors I find they have never even owned one, but have strong negative feelings none the less.
while with some other guys it seems like if their weatherby was broken/or stolen they would be forced to give up hunting until it was replaced and they could not use a BROWNING, SAKO,COLT SAUER , or maybe a REMINGTON without feeling as though they were being punished.
can you explain it! I can,t!

I figured somebody liked the darn things. I know one person personally (right now, I have known others in the past) that shoots a Wby. and it's a 257 Wby Mag. He's satisfied with it except for the high priced ammo. He wants to reload and he asked me. He has the custom load all worked up. I told him to buy some dies, powder, bullets and primers - come on over and I'd get him set up to start cranking out cheap ammo. That was last Summer. I think he just decided to shoot less.

I guess most of it has to do with personal preference, kinda like a person's favorite color or something. I guess I never really got that wrapped up in the whole my dad can beat up your dad thing. Now, trucks are a different story!!!!!!!!!!

No offense intended and I understand your post, and it is a good post, (but you didn't need me to tell you that) but I depend on a rifle that I am absolutely assured of being able to get ammunition for in most any circumstances. The rest are novelties.

I'm not a Weatherby fan... too much free bored.. too many locking lugs... high priced ammo... they keep changing manufacturing plants.. the list could go on but why bother

Just looking at the rifles or the cartridges ballsitics give me the willy's. Any coming into my possession would very rapidly move on.

I have a friend that admires their looks. I tell him that comparing them to a fine classic stock is like comparing a decked out New Orleans pimp to a distinguished gentleman in a tuxedo. :)

I saw Wby ads in outdoor magazines when I was a kid so like everything else, I asked my old man about em.

He thought they were very nice.

'Guns rich folks buy but are afraid to hunt with. It might get a scratch.' :D

I dreamed about a Wby for at least one night.

Now days, I wouldn't have one to use if you gave it to me free. Bolt guns doan fit in well with the type hunting situations I often encounter in this area and I ain't tryin to impress anyone.

I liked Weatherby shotguns once upon a time but their rifles never really turned me on! The ammo is twice as much, it seems it takes 20% more powder to arrive at just 8% more power. I also never cared for all those so called locking lugs.:(

However, I do have a bit of a love affair with my model 70 Winchesters in various calibers. It is just real tuff to beat a model 70 Winchester as a hunting rifle. You always hear how Remington's are so much more accurate out of the box but Carlos Hathcock might have something to say about Winchesters accuracy in the 30-06 he carried back in the 60's.;) :) :D

I went to the range Saturday to help my boys sight in for the upcoming deer season. The .30-06 son had a box and a half of ammo. The .300 Weatherby Magnum son had less than half a box of factory loads and was complaining about over $3.00 a shot. His remark as we left the range was "That just leaves me three rounds for deer season." I would go into ammunition withdrawal if I had only three rounds to take deer hunting. Then too the stores are not stocking the high priced or the less popular cartridges that they could get caught with after the deer season. #2 son got a good deal on that Weatherby rifle when he bought it, but it has since bitten him with rust, recoil, the high price and availability of ammunition. Frankly I wouldn't trade him for my Winchester, Remington, Savage or Ruger.

your kid needs to get into reloading, for that weatherby Id seriously doubt it if either of my sons has ever shot a factory loaded cartridge in the last 35 years, you can custom design the loads and drop the cost significantly

get several reloading manuals but , about 70-73 grains of IMR 4831 and a 215 federal primer work well in my 300 wby mag with the hornady 190 gain bullets, Ive never seen a deer or ELK not drop once hit with that load
