View Full Version : What are thre bucks doing this week?
Are they still chasing after girls and heading for home at night, or have they rounded up a little harem and are just staying close to them 'til the breeding is over?
I saw an article in the last F&S about how bucks will range several miles away overnight before returning to their home-range & favorite hidey-hole, but what's your strategy for right now?
Are you hunting does, funnels, food sources, or....???

I'm hunting around the biggest rubs that I can find in my area just to the thicker side of where there are a number of scrapes with some big foot prints in them. There is an evergreen finger through a creek bed to my right with evergreens behind me on the edge of where it changes to deciduous trees and brush. It is post rut pretty much now up here and I'm going to key in on those bigger rubs where the big guy felt comfortable pre-rut because sooner or later, he'll be back. Security cover has always worked well for me post rut. That stand is 75 yards away from the largest rub that I have ever seen in the woods that Twanger put a picture up of for me a couple of years back. Reach your arms around and grab your right wrist bone with your left thumb and index finger. I would have liked to seen that deer.

Ours our still tending does, or trolling for new ones. Friday they were locked down pretty good and made for a terrible hunt.

Where I hunt they haven't started anything very seriously. I saw several bucks in contact with each other last weekend and there wasn't any obvious agression. Saturday afternoon I did see a couple of yearlings playing like they were fighting with each other and I guess they are 3 weeks or so ahead of the older deer. I have spotted a half-dozen scrapes. The peak of the rut at my place is mid_December and I'm sure that I'll start seeing some rutting activity before too long and it will continue into January.

It's looking like the rut is just about done here. It was going on the first
week of Nov. We saw bucks with does the first Sat. 11/7 but this last
weekend which was the first weekend of rifle season we never saw a buck
with the doe we were seeing. The buck my buddy got was just wandering
through the woods and not acting like it was trailing a hot doe.
Our muzzleloader season is in Dec. after the rifle season and the rut and it's
rare for us to see a buck then. They just seem to disappear.
Yeah, it's been so hot around here that not much has happened yet it seems - or maybe it's all going on at night, or maybe in the rain... Sure had plenty o' that lately.
I'll let you know what I see after I see it ;)

That's the case here in NY. Way too warm for this time of year. Very little deer activity/ movement during daylight hours. Better figure on hunting the bedding areas or you ain't gonna see much.

At one point along my bus route is a portion of high fence. This morning I topped a hill and there stacked against the fence (outside) like sheep were at least a dozen does and a few yearlings. I slowed way down cause they were going to cross the road (they couldn't go through the fence) and started honking the horn. They all trot back across the road and as I pass where they were, there stands a young 8 pt buck, inside the fence. Not sure why all those does were standing RIGHT THERE with that one buck. There were no bucks with them but probably 20 deer total within sight outside the fence and only one inside.
DamnifIknow what they're doing!

I hunt the rut in the same manner I hunt the rest of the season.
I try to determing where there eating and sleeping then position myself somewhere between these two areas.
A deer can only rub fur for so long before they will either get hungry or tired and when they do I will be there.

Here in Maryland the bucks are dogging does and the big-boys are showing themselves in daylight.
Hopefully this will continue through the end of next week.
Planning to hunt tonight... wish me luck!

Saw a couple of middle aged bucks still feeding together last weekend in S. TX. Not hair on end, but a little aggressive. Lots of rubs and some scrapes.
I expect the real searching will begin in a couple weeks.
