have you ever wanted to own a rifle in a caliber you've never even seen, but once you looked over the ballistics, you just knew that if the opportunity was there you would grab one.
the first time for me was looking thru a weatherby catalog and seeing the ballistics a 250 grain bullet from the 340 weatherby could provide at about 2900fps, once I got one it was truly impressive.
Well I might be insane but I also felt that way the first time I looked at a 375H&H carbine, with a 300 grain bullet at about 2500fps and the first time I looked over the 458 LOTT with a 500 grain bullet at 2300fps, and the 416 weatherbys 400 grain bullet ballistics, and the 378 weatherby pushing a 300 grain at 2900fps, and I think the new SAKO 370 mag with its 286 grain bullet at 2550fps looks like it may be the sixth time.(Im looking into getting one)
I guess Im a bit easily impressed with the results Ive always gotten from the 34 caliber and larger rifles that push a decent weight for the caliber slug ,on larger game, but I guess we all have our little quirks.
theres just something I really like about a rifle in a caliber that really hits hard.

rimrock,
What do you use that HEAVY CALIBER stuff for?
I finally got a .35 Whelen Remington Classic a few years ago. The .35 Whelen is my biggest rifle, then comes a 7mm RM and a .264 WM. Most of my shooting is done with .30-06, .308, 7x57 and .243 rifles. Happily, I have all the rifles I could ever need or want. I just want to live long enough to wear a few favorites out.

Being a reloader I always envied the guys that would come into the gun shop
that I hung out at and swap guns on a regular basis. They would do it just
to try a different model or caliber. They would always swap and have to
throw in some cash with the deal. They were happy with that. I just never
had the extra money. At least no to just try a gun so that I could say" I
use to have one of those".
If I had the money when I was younger I would like to have tried loading
and shooting different calibers. I would of been more into the ballistics
than the ownership part of the deal.

heavy caliber , high quality rifles are a bit like women in your life, ones probably all most guys can afford, but having a few might be nice, yet still most guys dream of having a harem of dozens of pretty ones.
Ive purchased a few dozen over the years but sold many, of them when finances forced me too.
a few were so impressive or useful that they are held onto, the 375 H&H, and 340 wby, are the two I find the most useful, and the 378 WBY fall into that group in my opinion, the others are great to play with.

Come to think of it I do like the same qualities in my rifles and my women. Petite, light, soft spoken and gentle are good. Never liked either one to be big, heavy, loud and able to beat the crap outta me.

But then again, it's kinda nice when she can rock your world every now and again......

GF,
LOL! I presuppose under them conditions, BOTH ear plugs and muffs are MANDATORY!
I am on the wrong side of age 60 for the "Rough Stuff" according to Doctor's Orders! LOL.

Regarding calibers... Yep, the 6.5-06 just sorta calls my name for no particular reason and would fit no niche that isn't already covered by other calibers in my safe. I just want one, isn't that reason enough? :)

When I built my 35 Whelen I had never even seen a cartridge, but I knew I wanted one. In fact I didn't even buy a box of ammo until it was ready to shoot. I think I bought 3 or 4 boxes and then started making brass out of 06 cases. What I did do before it was done was to run the neck of an 06 case into my 35 Rem size die and then seated a 158 gr jacketed hollow point .358 bullet in the case with the 35 rem seat die. It gave me a good (but not exact) idea of what to expect them to look like.
I've wanted a .375 Dakota for some time now (but have been too lazy to build one) and I've never seen that round either. I like it because of it's near 375 H&H ballistics and that it will fit in a standard length 98 Mauser action.

I think most guys read the gun tests on new guns and say, wow, thats nice, I think ILL get one....when the 445 dan wesson super mags first came out I knew I wanted one, so I ordered one along with cases and dies, its an excellent revolver well designed and MINES well finished, but it taught me a good deal about both hunting and reloading, and while its easily far more powerful than a 44 mag, (being very close to the ballistics of a 454 cassul) its also bigger & heavier than ideal.
it also prevented me from having any strong desire toward buying a 460 or 500 S&W revolver, simply because, with the correct hand loads it shoots clear thru every large hog or deer from almost any range or angle, so I don,t see how IM going to get any gains from a larger and heavier revolver.
When the 375 RUGER came out I thought Id jump on one, and probably would have at that time if I could have found one at a good price, but after the LUST in my eyes dimmed a bit and sanity returned I realized I own an accurate 375 H&H and a WBY 378 and the 375 ruger was not going to do a darn thing that they won,t do except cost more money

I have purchased used rifles mainly because of certain calibers. For example, a few years ago I came across a pre-64 Model 94 that had been re-bored into 38/55. I always like 'different' calibers, so of course I bought it and I love reloading for it. The same goes for an old Wnchester Model 43 in 22 Hornet, I bought that one based on the caliber. I also own a Browning Model 65 in .218 Bee, and a Savage 99 in 300 Savage.. So I guess you can say I have a thing for old calibers. I do own several rifles in 30/06, one in 25/06 and one in .270, but I have a soft spot for things that are a bit older and not too common.
Just about every rifle I bought except a 22 was purchased only after reading about it somewhere. This includes a 358, 35rem, 7-08, 270, 338-08, 338wiinmag. I guess I even got my first 30/30 after talking to someone.
