I went to a presentation by Chris (www.christophernyerges.com) at the Adventurers' Club, Los Angeles (www.adventurersclub.org) and was really impressed. He knows just about everything about edible wild plants and his classes are very reasonable, if you're in the SoCal area.
One thing I took away from the lecture is that if you come across something in SoCal that looks like parsley or carrot tops, don't eat it. He's found a lot of local hemlock with that appearance and he says it will kill you in about an hour.

DWK, I'd like to hear what he had to say. Most people who get lost die of hypothermia... Starvation is usually the last thing for a lost person to be concerned with. Dehydration however also be a concern.
Eating wild "edible" plants is usually the last thing a person who is lost should do unless he or she is 110% certain that the food source is safe.

I feel the same way. Most people can last at least several weeks without food and I've carefully cultivated the ability to go several months (or I'm just a fat bastid!:D). With a few rare exceptions (like wild onions in an area I know well), I am presently not willing to eat most wild plants in a short-term survival situation. Of course, if I were well trained by someone like Chris, I'd be willing to add a few to the list.
Chris also teaches primitive hunting, trapping, fishing, fire starting, shelters, water procurement, etc. so even if a person isn't looking to learn about edible wild foliage, Chris still has a lot to offer.
