I went to a friend's farm to cull some does on Saturday.
My buddy Scott and I hunted all day.
I was fortunate to kill three deer, and he took one.
I'm constantly amazed by how powerful that big 460grain conical is.
All three deer I shot didn't take a step. DRT!
One flipped over completely and laid still.

So that's two for the Encore and three for the White M97.

I'm gonna have to take the Javelina pistol out next time!

How many deer is that for you so far this season, Twanger?

Twanger

That make 17 deer for the season so far.
12 with a bow, and 5 with a muzzleloader.
My back is sore tonight from hauling deer around.
Cut two up today... still have two more hanging.

At about 5am after an 800 yard walk into the woods my buddy points to some trees in an area I've never hunted before and says "pick one." It's pitch dark of course. Then he said - I'm heading to the other stand and left me there staring up at a bunch of trees. :D

I thought it might be fun to post the text-message transcript. We had a good time chatting throughout the day...

S is him, T is me.

S 0635 - The deer should coming from the NE in an hour.

T 0640 - Thanks - good hunting.

S 0723 - XXX said BBD. He shot it about half an hour ago.

T - BBD?

S - Big Boy down.

T - Gotcha. I heard a shot close by about that time. Good for him!

T 0745 - Does are late. Wind is taking my scent to the north east. Not good.

S 0806 - XXX was late getting in, and was in the stand 15-min. The deer ran to within 20 yards of the Gator. Some people have all the luck!

T - Wow. That's funny! Did you send the email to the deer last night or this morning? They are very late. :-)

S 0822 - It's strange... I have seen nada myself.

T - I had a squirrel come in from the north east around 0720... ;-)

T 0853 - Hey! Who slipped this can of "Deer Away" in my pack?

T 0854 - So what's the difference between broccoli and boogers?

S 0915 - I give up. What?

T - Kids won't eat broccoli!

S - Nice. Did someone shoot near you?

T - I thought it might have been you. I was hoping!

S - There seems to be two hunters just north of me.

T - How far are you from me? I can't see you.

S - Me again. Five deer just ran to the south of me. Get ready!

T - Thanks. I don't see them yet.

S 0930 - I was just wondering, are you down to your boxer's sunbathing? (Note: I'm known for not wearing alot of clothes while hunting because I get hot so easy)

T - It has been so toasty this morning I was considering it (Note: This is bravado - It was windy and cold, and I'd been shivering for an hour!)

T - Where are you in relation to me?

T - Hey - A doe just slipped by me 60 yds SW heading W!!!

S - I'm just north of you.

T - K

T 0946 - What's the difference between a strip club and a Chinese Circus?

S 1001 - I give up. What?

T - One has a cunning array of stunts...

S - Funny.

T - Two big does 100yds S.

T 1058 - BOOM! (Shoots). Me again... Doe down.

S - Good deal. Could you let some filter my way?

T - Ok. I won't shoot anymore.

T - This one was feeding on brush about 30 yards SW of your crooked tree stand. The deer flipped completely over.

T - Two does going North! No three! I coulda plugged one more... from 10 yards from my stand. Didn't shoot though. They angled NE. I probably should have plugged one more while I had the chance.

S - Big spike just came through. Shoot all you like and I will help you get them out.

T - Thanks. Dang. Shoulda plugged one more. I was hoping they'd go on up to you.

T 1115 - Should we stay on stand a little longer? Seems hot right now.

S - sounds good to me. How about another hour?

T - Ok by me. That doe will keep. Wow, those big conicals are devastating. You should see the carnage behind where the deer was standing. It's about 40 yards away and I can see blood and deer bits without the scope. Hoooo-weeee.

T 1202 - I think they were all in the same group. Nothing now for a while. Climbing down...

T - 1202 - Dang it! I uncapped the gun, turned around to the pack and there was a dozen deer about 30 yards behind me. I turned back to the gun and capped up, but fumbled the capper and it clanked my stand. All eyes turned skyward. I lined up a doe but had another behind her. Switched to another but they all bolted before I could pull the trigger! Dang. That's hunting! Climbing down...

So we gutted and hauled the small doe to the road and met XXX who brought the gator and we loaded her up. We ate lunch and were back on stand at 2:30pm in a different place, sitting about 70 yards apart.

S 1506 - BOOM! (Shoots)

T 1507 - Squirrel? :-)

S - Big mature doe down. Had junior in cross hairs also but could not determine if it was a button.

T - you have to drag it! Thanks for the button reminder. Gotta be reeeeeeeel careful. Just kidding. I'll help drag. (Note: I'm shooting small deer. They are easier to drag.)

S - She's a 90+ lb doe.

T - On second thoughts... I'll go for help. :-) Congrats!!!

T 1522 - Big deer 100yds out heading SW away! Dang. It's heading away.

S 1532 - Did you see which way the little one went?

T - never saw it.

S- The shot must have been a big surprise!

T - Made me jump a little! It was certainly loud!

S - I love it!

T 1547 - DEER!

T 1548 - BOOM (shoots). Loud enough for ya? Doe down!

S - yeah, that was loud. Mrrrrrrp. (blows grunt call).

S 1555 - S calls me.... but I've reloaded and in the process of aiming at another deer. I ignore it.

T 1557 - BOOM! (Shoots).

T 1558 - How about that? Was that one loud enough? :-) Another doe down.

S 1559 - That's three on the ground. Think we should quit?

T 1600 - Yep. We have to get them all to the road before it gets dark - that's gonna be work.

cool exchanges. :)

460grain conical? ...

I've got a 385gr Buffalo bullet loaded in my 50cal. Knight. I know I'm sacrificing some range but I don't care.

Where can I find a bigger slug and what are my options.

Thanks Bowman. We had SO much fun hunting Saturday, I can't begin to say.
It's a lot of fun sharing a hunt with a good friend. Sometimes we double-up archery hunting too, but most of the time it's "lone wolf" hunting.

Mark, Hunter280man made the bullets for me. They are knurled hollow-point Magtips and are the most accurate bullets I've ever seen... going 5 into 1.1 inches at 100 yards.

They are slow, only 1250 fps, but so heavy that they power right through anything. On one of the shots Saturday, a steep one, it broke the near leg up high and angled through the rib-cage and snapped 5 ribs going out - like they were toothpics. I'm only using 70gr T72F powder, but you don't need a lot when the bullet is so heavy.

The gun is sighted in 2 inches high at 50 yards and 1 inch low at 100 yards. Beyond that, well, the trajectory looks like a rainbow, but like you, I don't mind giving up some range. For the most part, hunting eastern woods is a game played inside 100 yards.

I shoot a Hornady Great Plains 385gr hollow point conical in the Hawkin, and it has good penetration too. Is that the one you're shooting?

You've got a number of choices for truly big conicals... Mark (Hunter280man) makes 50-cal bullets, and would probably make a 550gr conical for your gun.

Another option is No Excuses Bullets. I shoot their 410gr conical in my 41-cal pistol, and it prints about 2.5-inches at 50 yards. All of that scatter is me.

N.E. makes a 495 and 535gr bullet in 50-cal. See: http://www.muzzleloading-bullets.com/

“NO EXCUSES” are guaranteed to load as easily and shoot with greater accuracy than any other bullet currently available, regardless of price, or your money will be cheerfully refunded. No questions asked!

Scratchin' my head a little....

I don't know whether it's kinda cool that you can 'chat' with a buddy during a long day on stand (and without having to sit in the same tree), or if the technology is an unwelcome intrusion on the solitude of a hunt...

I guess that's why they come with an off switch :D

Passing thought, though....

Could the passing of info regarding deer movements be construed as a legal violation where you live? JMO, in a deer-glutted state and in a situation where all you're doing is providing a bit of a heads-up from one treestand hunter to another, it's a non-issue. But if there were any 'driving' of the deer involved or if one party were to be directing a second party towards the animals, the spirit & standards of Fair Chase would be violated.

So just a reminder - there's Right, there's Wrong, and there's Stuff You Can Get Nailed For, right or wrong notwithstanding....

I see what you're saying GF.
Other than open our eyes wider and perhaps in the right direction, there's really no action we're taking based on these text messages. We're both in tree stands and completely immobile. :D

It's not like we're calling in actionable information - like if we said "walk 100 yards west to those blow-downs and the deer should arrive in 3 minutes."

Agreed...No harm, no foul, IMO...

But you always have to keep an eye on what 'can and will be used against you in a court of law'.....

You never know when you'll run across somebody with an attitude, no matter how good natured you try to be....

You guys should listen to the dog hunters on lsb CB radio around here. Often the deer's only chance is if it's passed up. They can't outrun the radio.

Which likely explains why dog hunting tends to stir up strong feelings, yea or nay....

I ordered some of those NE 460gr slugs and they arrived today. :)

Gotta make time to go shoot some asap.

I wanna shoot a deer the dogs are running with one but I'm somewhat dubious about only having one shot. Guess I could take both rifles. :D

I've thought about bringing two guns ... maybe the pistol for close shots (inside 40 yds) and the rifle for shooting out to 125 yards.

when the dogs are running sometimes the shot window is 5 seconds or less.

I could but right now it's in mint condition, ... never been fired.

I bought it to hunt with but it sure looks nice.

I've found that when bow hunting this is often the case too, and we don't run deer with dogs. Last Saturday morning just at shooting light I had a deer come by my stand at 15 yards, and as I was deciding if it was really light enough to see my pins and through my peep it walked out of my shot window and was gone. Probably 5 seconds of opportunity, maybe less. I should have been more aggressive and should have been drawing my bow while trying to figure it out.

That's what I did wrong on my Elk trip; I waited 'til too late to draw (forgetting that you can hold a contraption at full draw all freakin' day, if needs be).

I still don't know if I passed up a perfectly makeable shot or not:confused::o

About that double....

Mint, schmint! I'd bet Don would tell you to get it out there and get one for him!

Don and I killed some crows and small game with it but we didn't discuss it as a deer gun. :D

Hey Twanger, When are you going to let that javelina eat some venison?

I'd like to get a deer with one of my contenders but we're only allowed to
take one deer a year with a rifle or center fire handgun. At best I usually
only get one chance at a buck and I'd hate to screw it up playing with a
hand gun.:)

Twanger
12-11-2009, 05:00 PM
PH - I'll probably take the 45-cal Javelina out in late ML season if I get a chance to hunt. I currently have two business trips scheduled between now and Jan 1, and am not so hopeful about time availability afield.

I'm currently shooting a white 350-gr Powerstar sabot out of the gun using 55 gr T73F and it's shooting really well - about 1" 3-shot groups at 50 yards off the bench. He'll, it's shooting about as well as half my long guns.

It wears a nice Leupold 2X long eye relief scope.

12-11-2009, 05:48 PM
Hey Twanger, if you hunt with the javalina will you take it up into
a tree stand or hunt it from the ground?

If we could kill a few deer during our season I'd hunt with a rifle to
make sure I had venison in the freezer then I'd hunt with a handgun.

That's my strategy too.

I hunt with it from a tree stand.... treating it like a bow that goes boom.

A friend in Tx had a lot of ML pistols, replicas I guess. I didn't then and still don't know a lot about this stuff.

Anyway, we use to shoot round balls a lot and the accuracy was pretty amazing. We use to shoot from his 2 story deck at a stump perhaps 150yds out in the lake. We actually got to where we could hit it. :D

I've never considered hunting with one though.
