Shot this one Friday after Thanksgiving on my place. It was, and still is the doe only rifle season, and I tagged this one with a rifle tag, and is the reason for the hunter orange hat. I have been getting grief over not taking pics of bowkills from some buddies, so I've decided to step up and take the pics.

Mature doe, 19yrd shot, 80yd run and crash, super blood trail. This makes 3 years in a row for getting a bow kill at the home place. It's looking like I do better when I leave the rifle home.:o

I took the bow so I would still be able to shoot if decent buck came by, and really all of my stands are set up for bow shots anyway.

Second bow kill of the year and I haven't filled a general bow tag yet. Kinda odd.

Is that an arrow wound in the middle of the heart?

I'd say more towards the front than the middle.;)

congrats. :)

one of the neatest things, killing one with the bow while guns are going off in the distance.

POIFIKT! My heart-shot whitey buck (which suddenly seems a LONG time ago!) was about an inch lower than that, and I had almost exactly the same result - just no blood trail.

Way to go, man!

I got my hunting plans for Friday and Saturday trampled by visiting family, so haven't been out in over a week and it's starting to drive me nuts. Next Tuesday ends the rifle season, so after that I'll have to limber up the bow or buy an ML tag....

I did go ahead and order one of those smokers that NC's so fond of, though, so hopefully I have figured out the whole house-stink issue, at least enough to fool myself, if not the deer... :D

Now if I can just avoid getting my hunting duds too terribly contaminated with the UV-brightening laundry soaps, I should be OK. I don't know if we stick out to the deer as much as some (like the UV-killer salesmen) would say, but when I look down and my 'camo' pants appear to my eyes to be glowing in the dark, I have to admit that I sure feel a lot less stealthy than I need to in order to maintain the right frame of mind to be out there and still call it Hunting....

You don't seem to have that problem...

Quick Q: Did you go bow-only, or did you have a rifle along as well? I'm assuming that you were bowhunting, period, but I keep pondering this one because of the regs where I live...

I know it's illegal to possess a firearm while bowhunting, but is it illegal to possess a bow while hunting with a rifle in a legal firearms area and with a rifle tag in your pocket???

Yes, I'm being a wise-guy, but you think about it.....

I wondered at first why that heart was in the picture. I'm surprized you hit the heart considering the location of the entry wound. I thought the heart was lower than that. Guess not!

Nice shootin' Dave! Gotta love seeing that three-sided hole in the heart.
They ain't gonna run very far when they are hit like that!

You know... I love hunting with a muzzleloader, but there's nothing like archery tackle.

GF-I was bow only in the stand. I could have gone either way with the bow/rifle, but chose the bow literally last minute. I didn't see a need to carry both rifle and bow.

There was a lot more deer activity than I expected for it being so near the close of the general gun season, and for having the antlerless portion still going.

Postoak-That was a pretty much straight 90 degree b-side shot. Exit was one rib back of the entry and a bit lower.
It looks funny because the camera angle is looking at the belly of the deer. If I would have been standing by it's tail or front of chest it would show the shot entry better. Exit was low.

Post- Here's the exit. This shows the angle better for some reason.

How high up were you?

GF.

Yikes! And you did such a nice job cleaning up the other side. ;)

That side's such a muss it's a wonder any blood actually made it to the ground :D

Center the heart and get a low exit through the ribs. What more could a guy ask for?

Post Oak - I'm gonna guess he was a bit north o' 20 feet, because I took a similar range shot from about 15 feet and my exit would have been a couple inches higher, had I not run into the humerus on the far-side ...

I wasn't very high up, 14' or so, maybe not that high. The entry is just above the 'knee', right in the pocket of the shoulder.

Those montecs leave a nice blood trail. I can't say why, but it seems they leave a lot more blood than my Steelheads that are within 1/16" diameter. Angles and luck may have something to do with it. My steelhead hits have been higher lung hits for the most part. Luck of the draw I guess.

Postoak, in that second pic you are looking into the off side armpit. The deer is partially on it's back. I think that is why the shot looks the way it does.

That's not a 'knee', bud - it's a shoulder joint! Looks like you drilled the triceps, which I understand is the shot that they recommend in Africa, where if you draw blood, your tag is punched for you and you pay your fee....

Stay off of the leg bones and shoulder blade that far forward and you're gonna hit the big pipes or the pump - barring too flat of a quartering angle, anyway....
