View Full Version : Asking Santa for Any Sharpened Steel?

I'd like to get a really fine machete or golok. I have axes, kukris, hawks, and decent machetes but nothing really nice. Maybe Santa will find one for me?

Are you hoping to receive anything sharp and pointy for the holidays?

DWK, is there some point where a guy just says, "Enough is enough"? I've been reading you here for years and realize that you must have a very goodly assortment of various knives and edged tools. Actually the only guys that I ever saw wear out a knife were those guys who worked in the boning room at the packing house. Some of those Dexter boning knives looked like ice picks after a while.

Yes, there are definitely things that people buy because they like them, rather than need them. I have friends with a couple safes full of hunting rifles whereas I do about 90% of my rifle hunting with a single weapon. Those friends laugh when I pull out half a dozen knives to field dress the kill (assuming I dropped it relatively near the 4WD)!

I have not been buying nearly as many knives in the last few years. At this point, something has to be either (1) very special or (2) fill a gap in my collection. The absence of a high quality machete or golok is a gap in my collection.

Happy holidays!

I have slowed down buying knives considerably in the last couple of years also. With that said, I am waiting word from Dozier my new Sweetwater Guides Knife is ready to ship. Should be any day now...

So how about the new Dozier scandi? I've heard there's already a year waiting list, but some dealers may get a few earlier. It looks sweet and the only thing I would change is to eliminate the choil/finger guard area.

That new Scandi Grind might just be the "shizzle!" One of the new Bushman Scandi knives was for sale on the Dozier website, but it is long gone. Dozier's wait is well over the year mark as evidenced by my order.

I wouldn't mind having one for carving trap triggers, fire drill components, etc. Of course, a lot of the knives I already have will do that just fine so I certainly don't need a Dozier scandi.

Of course not... but has that ever stopped you from buying a new knife yet?

You got me there!;)

However, if I were to get a really nice scandi grind knife, I'd probably order it from one of the custom makers who post in the Wilderness section over at Bladeforums. That way I could get a little thicker/longer handle than on the Dozier and have the cutting edge run right back to the grip. I could also get a rougher handle finish---maybe on wood.

Of course, that would mean giving up the legendary Dozier D2 and his superb kydex sheaths.....

Yeah, most of us probably don't need all the knives we have but in the scheme of things knives are cheap. I can buy several knives for the price of one game of golf. If I played golf no one would bat an eye, but if I showed someone three new knives I bought they would think I was being extravagent...

I understand what you're saying. A sound point.

One thing I still need is a couple good carry systems for several of my knives. I have a few bare fixed blade knives that I bought and I'd like to be able to carry them once I'm out of CA.
