Now that Altjaeger has reminded me, I do remember the post of that name which went on for years.

Some years after it started, I was lucky to get a chance to hunt a buffalo. That convinced me I would NEVER consider any buckshot, even 10 .70 caliber lead balls, adequate on such an animal.

My first shot, a raking shot with a TSX, penetrated about four feet. The buffalo ran away. Fun tracking a wounded Cape buffalo, what? After we came up on it I fired a Texas heart shot which broke the front shoulder. That shot, a solid, penetrated at least six feet.

Try that with buckshot.

The way I see it, buckshot would be effective if the buff was carnivorous and swallowed you whole so you could get a few shots in from up close.

Sorry Indy, i don't hope you hunt with me in the future with buckshot...LOL. The minimum calibre is a .375 and that is a challenge on its own with a charging cape buffalo. With "Buff" always have to much gun...

Wouldn't it take about 10 rounds of 12-ga to move 10 .70 cal roundballs?

And back when they were limited to roundball, I think the old-timers favored an 8-bore for that kind o' work

With "Buff" always have too much gun...

I have this armchair theory that the ideal Buff-stopper will hit the shooter roughly as hard as the bull's boss would if you were to miss. The difference being that the rifle will stop after pounding you once or twice, whereas the buff might rather make a hobby of it....:D

My experience includes only one buff.

To kill it, it was solidly hit with five pellets. However each "pellet" weighed 450 grains and left the muzzle at 2250 fps. .458" in diameter. Total striking energy about 5000 foot pounds.

No way I would shoot at a buff with traditional buckshot. That might anger the buff.

I would think that hunting pheasants in South Dakota would work at 20 yards with a BB Gun too!

INDY, can't wait until I can shoot a couple of those black buffs with my .470 Capstick! Now all I got to do is keep my feet in good shape, along with the rest of my body of course.:D:D:D

This is a classic thread, resurrected like one of those horror movie villains that just can't die!

The other one is "Grizzly Bear vs. Cape Buffalo"

If the original 0000 buckshot guy were still around, he'd probably like the tri-ball load from www.dixieslugs.com. I'll bet it would be better than most buckshot loads but I wouldn't want to shoot it at any variety of buff!

Gentlemen, there is one place in the world I don't want to be, and that is in the bush where some nut is trying to kill cape buffalo with a damn shotgun!
