Swamp, how come there's no ammunition forum?

Or perhaps one named "Calibers and Cartridges"?

It seems to me we have too many forums now resulting in each post no longer being viewed and discussed in the depth they once were. For example on game if I remember right we had Deer, (all North American species). Big Game (elk, moose, bear, sheep, etc), exotics, Hogs, Varmits, Small and Upland Game, Africa and then all other continents.

That may not be exact, but I believe close. It seems we had far more participation and discussion then. Cartridges get pretty well discussed now depending on the point or question of the poster. The post it would seem would be discussed in greaer depth on desirability for particular game, or accuracy/function from what weapons or how loads can be manipulated. If anything I think reconsolidating forums would be beneficial.

I with Paul on this. It's a fine line between not enough and too many. There is a point where it is tiresome to chase all the different threads around and with the propensity of some posters to draw any discussion toward their own agenda there is already a lot of duplication. postoak, on the other hand, I can see where an ammunition forum would be interesting. I think that, as Paul points out, there would be a lot of pertinent discussion and information that would be missed by those who might benefit from it the most. Take the current "Ballistic Tip" discussion going on in the WT Deer forum for instance. Were it to be confined to an "Ammunition" forum it would certainly be missed by a good many deer hunters who are making decisions about which ammunition to use for deer.

I know that if I were to want to go pronghorn hunting, I would want to be able to click on a "pronghorn" forum and see only posts pertaining to that activity and not have to search through a "North American Game" forum. It is a fine line. I know from looking at a few other sites that have a huge number of highly specific forums, they seem to have a huge number of members and a huge number of people logged onto their sites. I suppose there is some correlation there. Personally, I don't spend a huge amount of time there, personally preferring the "smaller pond" approach.

You may be at an optimum size right now Swamp. It just depends on what you're trying to do with your site. Good luck.

Well, we started out talking about plastic tips and deer bullets in that mega thread, but it morphed into more shooting technique, glassware and now shooting lanes. Down in the bullet section no one is going to be looking for something other than plastic tipped bullets. I guess we should start up a new thread instead of expanding others.

Well I guess that's just one of the natures of this medium. You answer and add a little and someone else expands on that, and so on. Kinda like a conversation. (unless I'm having it with #1 wife)

This is a strawman that reflects the general lines of my thoughts.

Combine all archery into one moving it down under Arms and Accesories.

Combine "Big Game" to the following:

Deer (all species)
North American Big Game
Hogs
Exotics and International Big Game

Combine Birds and Small Game into:

Small Game
Winged Game
Varmits
Dogs

Combine all Black Powder into one. I believe the reasons for the original split are gone and there is room for the cross-fertilization of ideas.

Under Shooting and Reloading have:

Reloading
Rifle Sports
Shotgun Sports

Combine all fishing into one

Change Outdoor Suvival to Camping and Outdoor Survival.

"The Range is now hot!!!"

With the forum rename, I'm happy, but the changes Alt outlined above seem logical -- if we want to reduce the number of forums. I almost always click on "New Posts" when I come here, so except for creating new threads and not having a forum that matches what I want to talk about, the forums as they are now are fine.
