Stick with Peanut oil. I tried cottonseed oil and was very disappointed (so was everyone else). They still ate it all (14# bird) but it did not have the same taste. For me it's peanut oil or nothing from now on.

Alan, have you seen those explosions lately on Mythbusters and some others when people try to put a frozen turkey into that hot oil? My brother-in-law did a turkey like that for us once and maybe like your cottonseed guests, we ate it, but it wasn't very high on the delectability scale. Make mine slow roasted.

A well seasoned turkey (well Thawed!) fried in Peanut oil is a real delight. The oil makes all the difference. I had been searching for alternatives since peanut oil went through the roof but if you're going to spend as much as it costs to fry a turkey then spending a few $$ more is worth a lot more taste.

I'm smoking one tomorrow so I'll have some sandwich fodder for hunting and fishing next week!

No, I haven't seen them but I can certainly imagine. As it is it takes me a full minute to lower the turkey into the oil at 350 degrees. I have a very healthy respect for hot grease. I spread some frying temp oil across the top of my right hand on the first day of a 5 day trip to Lake Fork one Spring Break about 11 - 12 years ago. I really did not understand what 3rd degree burns were all about until about 4 days later. It was just plain ugly. It was no more than 15 seconds after the grease hit until I had my hand submerged in ice water in the cooler. It hurt like the devil all night and then stopped hurting ................... until the skin sloughed off three days after that. It took a while before all the skin grew back. It was actually healing up before I went to the Doctor though. She scrubbed all the new skin off and put that whit e crap all over it. That hurt like Hell and set the healing back two weeks, I didn't go back. I'm very careful with hot oil, especially 4 gallons of it!

trying to deep fry a frozen turkey is like setting off a bomb.... BAD idea

Buy a deep frier and do it outside far away from the house or anything flammable and use a ten foot pole to lower turkey into hot grease or better yet start with cold or warm oil not hot oil, look for some of the lightest colored vegetable oil that you can find and when u taste the oil out of the bottle it should have very little taste

I prefer a safer approach and bake in a roasting pan at 325 F or so until done... must be thrawed before hand
