View Full Version : how many guys carry two totally different blades while hunting

now I may not be typical because I tend to backpack hunt well off roads and stay out in the wilderness for 3-4 days between supply trips to my base camp,, we usually have 4-6 guys in our elk camp, two-to 4 stay in the camp area and 2-to 4 guys back-pack in further following the elk herds, the base camp gets moved as required so keep that in mind.
ok for several years I attempted to find a single ideal knife that would both dress out deer and elk easily and allow me to do camping chores like cutting large poles to make a tripod to hang elk or for a shelter, fire wood etc,
it eventually became clear that a knife small and maneuverable enough to dress game would never have the length and mass to effectively chop wood etc.
I tried lots of combos,
some of the better ones were
a schrade sharp finger and a cold steel trail master
a cold steel master hunter and a cold steel trail master
a cold steel master hunter and a cold steel kukri, or tomahawk
a schrade woodsman and a cold steel Gurkha kukri, or a similar kukri
the last combo is what I found the best compromise
how about your gentlemen?
anyone else found it takes two blades to live efficiently in the wilderness

I can't criticize a kukri as I have several and use them a good deal---especially for trail clearing.
Other options would be a Gransfors Bruks mini belt hatchet at 12.8 oz. (weight of my mini). I have sometimes used a Busse Basic 9 for my chopper. Weighs a bit less than a kukri and just a couple ounces more than the mini hatchet.

On any given hunting trip I will go with at least 3 knives and far more likly 4.
At least two of the knives will be a Kershaw Elk skinner with a gut hook and a general purpose Kershaw skinner.
The other two knives will be of a smaller variety and very likly include my Hen & Rooster.
What I will also include is at least one small sharpener which is likly my Gerber

On any given day, I'll have at least three knife blades on my person. I carry an "Original" Leatherman (yes, I know the Leatherman dude is a Democrat jerk), a Leatherman Micra, and some sort of pocket knife. At present it's one of the new Schrades, a "Yellow Handle" Trapper that I picked up at a garage sale for $5. I figure it's worth that.
When hunting, I'll have all those and a fixed blade Western 66 or a Buck or a Schrade folder. The scabbards on my Sharpfingers have gotten so old and loose I'm afraid to carry the knives in them any more cause I'd hate to spend a day backtracking to find one of them (which I would do. I hate to lose a knife).
I like to get a pocket knife and use it for a while and then I put it up and get another one. There's some that I get out and carry again but not many.
I was in Bass Pro Shop the other day with #2 and #3 sons. Three store employees carried a canoe out and put it on the rack. They were trying to break some sort of little plastic thing on the canoe and after asking around, none of the three had a knife on them. I told the boys about it and between the three of us we produced 10 edges capable of cutting a plastic strap. We did not offer to do the cutting, but had a chuckle instead. I would figure that carrying a pocket knife would be mandatory in an outdoor store as an employee. Even friggin McGiver carried a Swiss Army Knife!

I carry a medium size stockman and a simpler model of the Victrinox Swiss Army such as the "Camper" every day and they are with me hunting as well. When deer hunting my day pack normally contains a Browning or Old Timer skinning knife, plus an European folding hunter for gutting. When I am not carrying the folding hunter my favorite gutting knife is an inexpensive Victrinox "NATO". Back at camp I have a butt pack with a wide assortment of knives for cutting to quarters and kitchen duties.

Like Alan, I have an original Leatherman and an early Wave. I refer to them as "Pre-Endorsement" Leatherman tools. I now use other multitools. Same goes for Cascade Designs (Thermarest), Mountain Hardware, and a few others whose management signed the same endorsement letter.
Another combo I've carried is a Joe Olson forged 52100 hunter with a sturdy 5" blade and a Silky Super Accel 210 saw.

One hunting knife is enough for me. Usually a medium to large folding lockback like my Buck 110 or 112. If I need to do some light wood cutting I'll take one of my Gransfors Bruk's or Wetterlings axes. Heavier wood cutting chores get the attention of my Stihl MS290 Farm Boss.

Doan know if it counts but my buck 317 has two blades.
For a pocket knife when hunting I always have some sort of Victorinox SAK with a saw blade. I like the Hiker model best I think. The Hiker is light, compact, has two knife blades, an assortment of screwdriver/can openers, tweezers/toothpick, and the saw blade is incredibly handy for clearing stand sites. Couple that with a Bob Dozier fixed blade sized for the game sought and I'm good to go for about whatever needs I am likely to run across.

I wish Victorinox would make about a 6-8" folding saw with that tooth pattern and sharpness. I think it would compete well against the Bahco/Kershaw Laplander and might rival the Silkys.

For a simple day of whitetail hunting I carry my everyday one handed lock back kabar, my leatherman, and an big old western folder. Most days I have a schrade on my hip too.

For me I carry 1 SOG Twitch and what ever is in the van at the time. I have different large knives for field work. But I assure you they are razer sharp. I hate to cut myself with dull knives LOL

I carry a folding gerber pocket knife almost everywhere, but its NOT in my opinion a decent hunting knife choice , I vastly prefer both my hunting knives are fixed blade designs, one with about a 3"- 4" curved edge for skinning dressing game and one with a 9" or larger blade, with some weight to its blade for chopping and slashing and heavier work

I've found that for deer hunting that more often than not I'll need to trim a branch or stick way more often than I'll need to use my folder for field dressing an animal. For that reason I carry a small Browning folding saw blade type knife and my small Sebenza for field dressing. I'd like a little thinner longer blade for the under the tail work, but I sure like that knife for all the rest of the field dressing. Surgical sharp and it stays that way plus easy clean up for a folder.

For my style of hunting...a fixed blade and a pocket knife are always on me. Both can vary greatly depending on my mood on any given day.
When I have my pack with me (which is approx. 75% of the time) I also have a Gerber 4" folder and a Swiss Army knife tucked away as back up.

I carry a Buck 110 single blade folder, and a Gerber folding saw.
Between the two, I've not needed anything else.

ahhh, the Gerber saw.
My buck 317 has 2 blades which handles all my knife work but when hunting I ALWAYS have a saw tucked inside my right boot. I use to carry a Sierra saw but these days I carry a Gerber.
this one (http://www.gerbergear.com/index.php/product/id/191)
Gotta have a saw using a climber as much as I do.
Often times I've got a pruner along too, especially if multiflora rose is around or I'm ground hunting. I've ruined some expensive pants in multiflora.
