On a previous post there was talk of Knight going out of business, and that people should
be thinking about getting spare parts for their rifles. Conversation turned to
breech plugs and how they wear out. I wasn't aware of that they would do that, but I went out and found another one for my wolverine. I guess my question is, what wears out? The breech plug threads? Do they tend to strip after a while because of the recoil? If they do, wouldn't it tend to strip the threads in the barrel also? I never really gave it much thought, until peeps started posting about it.
Thanks

Normally the small hole at the end of the BP (the flash hole) errodes or gets gas cut and accuracy drops off...

Ah.....I see...I was worried for abit. I asked the guy at
the gun shop about what would wear out, and if it might be the
breech plug threads. He said 'oh yeah that's the first to go'. It got me to
thinking (I know...I'll probably weaken the nation). But, those threads are pretty deep,
and mighty long, and surely they wouldn't wear out first. But, I figured it's best
to ask here, and get a proper answer. Some of those gun shop guys just collect a check.
No offense to Bill Mc....he knows his shyte.

I guess I can not believe a gun shop guy would say that. If you are doing your maintenance and installing the plug correctly - I can imagine the threads giving up unless there are other problems...

I'd worry more about the trigger assembly and any parts that are expended.
For example anyone with a Disc gun had better get a bunch of those.
Flame cutting from low speed powders like pyrodex or t7 should be a very minor concern.
Likely that rust/corrosion would cause more concern than that. Using a lower power Muzzleloading 209 Primer should help.
