We happenned upon a derringer pistol today and the discussion started...it was a .50 (I think, or there-abouts), percussion cap and it had a 3" bbl on it. It was about the size of a sharpie pen in total length (6" or so). What sort of fps would one expect out of the lead ball.

I'd be guessing between 700 and 1000 feet per second Max.

Interesting trip down the derringer lane.... but this is duelist pistol that I'da thought would have been a much longer barrel.... but then I guess you'd prefer to also not be hit... :)

I bet a .440 ball at 500 fps would hurt like hell :vollkommenauf:
I got shot with just a BB at 15 feet right on the thumbnail from a Daisy Red Rider when I was a kid.
I never forgot that pain !!!

i would think bill is right . Maybe 500fps depending on the load .
I had a little CVA derringer one time and with 20 grains , you better have a good hold on her .
But no doubt that in a close fight they would still go right through ya
Derringers were not dueling pistols they were built for those who needed or wanted to conceal it ..
Gamblers , Women and so called lowly gentleman.
Suggesting otherwise would be like taking a switch blade to a sword duel .
Im with ya on the shooting thing to bill .
I remember one time I shot myself in the boot with a Red Rider BB gun. Even through the heavy leather of the toe of the boot , it hurt like all get out . Did not go through but I sure thought it did .
Never forgot that

Can't imagine shooting one of those. . .I figured it would bruise my hand just pulling the trigger. . .
