Well I finally broke down a bought a dedicated varmint shooter.
After doing some research and talking to some shooters I decided to try
a Savage model 12. fcv. It's got a heavy fluted barrel, acu trigger, acu
stock, plastic stock, and it's in 22-250. It now wears a nikon 3 to 9
because I just happened to have the scope sitting around waiting for a gun
to sit on.
I have powder, bullets, primers, but no brass. I had to order some. None of the
gun shops around here stock any more than they have to.
So now it'll be a while before I get to play with my new toy.
I'm suppose to go coyote hunting this weekend with a guy that supposedly knows
how to call them in. We''ll see. I'll have to take one of my 243s until I get that 22-250
sighted in.

I sure wouldn't think taking a .243 after a coyote would give up anything to shooting one with a .22-250. If we had enough coyotes around here to justify having just one coyote cartridge, I'd be hard pressed to think up something better than a .243. They tell me that it works R-E-A-L-L-Y well. I had a heavy barrel 6mm for a time and I liked it on the range, but to carry it around out in the field, not so much.

Nice!
I've got a 50-year old .222 that my father hunted deer with in Texas, and it's very accurate, even with a 4X scope.
I wish I could use it more around here, but have to go up-state before it's legal to use a center-fire rifle.
These guns are fun to shoot... basically zero recoil.
Funny thing about some states... You can't use a CF for deer hunting, but you can use one for varmints on the same dirt.... Must have to do with hunter densities and # shots fired/day....

Hey Bushman, you're absolutely right. A 243 is a great caliber and would be super on coyotes.
I just happen to own a couple of 243s but I have a couple of problems.
One, they're not DEDICATED varmint rifles. One has shot a few deer ane the other one just takes up
space in my gun vault. That would be like taking a coon hound hunting ducks. It just wouldn't work well.
The other problem is I had a new/in box nikon scope just hanging around. As all hunters and gun nuts know
you can't leave a scope just hanging around like that. You never know what kind of trouble they might get into
so I had to have a new gun to put that scope on.
Now that I've saved the scope from getting into trouble I'm waiting for the brass I had to order so I can load
some ammo for this thing. I feel like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs waiting to try this gun out.
It's funny how most women don't understand about dedicated guns and scopes and stuff.
Of course you guys all know exactly what I'm talking about. lol
Hey Twanger, that 222 sounds like it would be fun to shoot. Years ago, early 70s, a buddy of mine had one and
we shot it a few times. He ended up moving out of state and I think he sold it. If I had known what was happening I would
of bought it.
It sucks to have rifles and have a hard time finding a place to shoot. As a kid I could shoot just about anywhere including
my own back yard. Over the years as thebtown has grown I've had to go farther and farther out to find a place to shoot.
A few years ago I could load a few test rounds and run down the road to a sand pit, set up and try them. Now days I have to
pack a lunch and drive a half hour to get to a place to shoot. It kind of takes the fun out of reloading and testing new loads.

PH, I like the way you think. That is always what I told Sweetness, guns are a lot like golf clubs I couldn't possibly coyote hunt with a gun, or one of the guns that I shoot deer with. Even though I was in the sales department, I couldn't convince her that there was a lot of value in a deceased coyote. After she was gone, Postoak needed a 3-9 scope on his .270 way more than he needed a 4.5-14x42AO Leupold Vari-XIII on his .270 so it found it's way into the UPS truck for a trip to my house. It looked really nice just sitting there in it's gold box, but I think that it is much happier now that it found a home on a new .221 Fireball. Fun has always been one of my favorite things and the fun factor of shooting those little hot .22's is way up there.

Nope, it is a Cooper M38 Jackson Varminter www.cooperfirearms.com I had a .222, a .222 Magnum and a 6mm for varmints and they were all too big for around here. I looked at getting a .22 Hornet or a .22K Hornet, but that .221 Fireball is just right out of a rifle. My buddy had an XP100 for a time and it was one hot little pistol, a little futuristic for my taste and it didn't let the Fireball be all that it could be out of that shorter barrel. Remington probably added the "Fireball" part after they saw what came out of the muzzle of that thing.

Bushman I finally let go my .222 Rem. in a CZ rifle which shot under 1/2 groups 24/7!!! Yep, it was just to hard to find that .222 ammo that the CZ really liked a bunch (Hornady 50 grn. Moly bullets) my .223 out shoots it now using reloads. Nonetheless, we will take 4 of those Savage model 12's to the field with us this summer for P-dog busting.

No, but it does slam you back aginst your safty belt when shooting from a tree stand.
Shot a lot of deer with pistols, but now stick pretty much to my rifles...
