View Full Version : Scopes for nice rimfire rifles

I use a scope on about half of my rimfire rifles.
On one, I have an inexpensive but pretty nice 6x42, to provide the same sight picture as my big game scopes when I practice.

On another, I have an old Weaver variable that my children gave me for Father's Day a long time ago. It suffices, and is kind of nostalgic, like the scopes of the 1960s, and it sits on a 1961 rifle.

I have a really nice .22 bolt action which is a tack driver. I put a big Bushnell 4-12x40AO airgun scope on it to test various brands of ammunition. Now I am going to put on a slimmer hunting scope. I also figure I might scope another niice .22, and even buy a CZ-453 or a Browning T-Bolt.

For those who have nice .22s, like the Marlin 39-A, Winchester Model 52, Browning M-52, A-Bolt 22, T-Bolt, 9422, BL-22, Anschutz, CZ-453, etc, what kinds of scopes are your running on them, and for what game? I prefer gloss on a gloss blue rifle, but some of the matte scopes look nice, too. I hunt squirrels, crows, and pigeons. The rifle is sighted in at 75 yards. I wouldn't mind something with target knobs for those 100 and even 200 yard shots. Ballistic Plex or Mil-Dots might be very useful, too.

I have been looking at the
Leupold 3-9x33 EFR, gloss
Bushnell 3-9x32 AO airgun, gloss, with target knobs
Weaver RV9, 3-9x32AO
Simmons 22 Mag 3-9x32AO
Burris Timberline 4-12x32AO Short Mag with Mil-Dot reticle

Since many shots are at realitively close range I'd go for a Leupold EFR scope.

I have a Anshutz 1422 Meister Grade with a 6.5 - 20 X40 Leupold I use for target (indoor offhand at 50 feet, outdoor bench at 50 yards, and outdoor offhand rimfire silhouette at 25, 50 75, and 100 meters), and squirrel hunting when I'm really mad at 'em .
All my other rimfires have either 1.5 to 5 or 2 to 7 power scopes

The Leupold 3-9x33 EFR is at the top of my list. $300.00 is really a good price for such a nice scope.
It is a beautiful scope, crystal clear, and sleek enough for a small .22 like an A-Bolt 22 or an Anschutz.

Swamp, it is tough enough to use on a centerfire, like mountain rifle in .270 Win or .308 Win?
I would think it would be ideal for that, right there with the Leupold 6x36 or 6x42mm scopes.
Having the same scope on a Tikka T3 or Steyr, and on a nice .22 would really appeal to me.

Some of my squirrel hunting is in really high forests, with trees over 125 feet tall, so I have this .22 zeroed at 75 yards.
That works well for pigeons and crows, too, out to 120 yards, without having to turn the vertical knob.

Lee, the EFR scope lets you focus and correct for parallax from about 7 yds out to infinity... Leupold is the only company I know that makes an EFR scope that actually works... And yes it is rugged enough on any centerfire rifle up to 458 Lott if you are so inclined
