I have always wondered about the 480 Ruger. I don't hear about them and I don't see them in the shops. Maybe they don't manufacture it anymore? Maybe I just haven't looked enough.
Anyone here have one or know anything about them?
Hornady considers their performance over the 44 magnum staggering. I like that word. Has a nice ring to it. Recoil is supposed to be much more manageable over a Casull.

I too think most people are missing a great option in the 480 ruger , I think is a much more reasonable choice than some of the other calibers, for what the vast majority of people will ever use it for
I own a 44 mag and 445 dwsm revolver and I have in the past owned a 454 cassul, and Ive shot the 500S&W and 460S&W revolvers, so I do know a bit about them, the fact is that the 44 mag loaded to its full potential is fine for most deer & hog hunts, the 480 ruger and 445 dwsm, add a noticeable bit of energy but in most cases, they are about the reasonable limit in recoil, from what Ive seen the lighter weight 454 cassul revolvers and the and the 500S&W and 460S&W revolvers, are just too difficult for most people to shoot, both fast and accurately at anything but very close range

At one time I think ruger did intent to offer the ruger alaskan in 480 ruger... or if they did it was a very limited production... not sure why it didnt catch on.... seems like it would be a good stopper with the right bullet

I happen to like the 480ruger, and wish it carried the popularity that it deserves.
This cartridge filled the need of a larger heavier bullet without the recoil of such pistols cartridges such as the 454 Casull, 460 and 500S&W.
The problem is the 480Ruger was a compromise between performance and comfort. It handled the need of a larger cartridge without adding to the
discomfort of shooting one. If the 454 Cas had not already been on the market and established itself or the 460 and 500S&W had not been released I
suspect the shooting world would have fallen in love with the 480Ruger.

Sadly I just checked Rugers website and could not find a pistol that was chambered in there name sake cartridge.

The gun writers loved that one when it came out; they said it was decidedly more convincing than a .44, but that the recoil was nothing that a seasoned hand with a .44 would find objectionable; probably - if it's everything they said, it'd probably the perfect balance in a heavy handgun.

But excellence has never been a predictor of commercial success.

The lack of interest in the 480 might give the opportunity to find one at a discounted price

i heard ruger is going to try to put together about 100 of the alaskans in 480 but then I think the problem will be finding 480 ammo for it... right now the alaskan in 454 is very hard to find...

I had a Ruger Alaskan 454. Sold it and have not regretted doing so.. 454 needs a 6-8 inch bbl to work properly. If you really want a Ruger Alaskan I suggest getting the 44mag version and filling it up with buffalo bore rounds.

although...the alaskan 454 was great fun loaded with 45 colt cowboy loads and made a great personal defense tool as such
