I finally got to fish 2 hours this weekend. The weather was warm and humid, and I front was coming from Tennessee, so I knew it would ruin things for a few days.

Caught them on top of the weeds, no matter the depth, from 2 feet to 20 feet.
Big nuclear green and white jig on a big Beetle Spin wire, and a Catalpa worm grub on a wide gap finesse hook with a 1/16 OZ split shot to get it down. 8-lb clear Trillene on a Shimanao Spheros spinning reel and 7-foot graphite rod.

Hooked 8, missed another (bit my big jig in half), lost 3 of them.
The five boated went 5 lbs, 3 lbs, 3, 2.5 and 2.5. A good afternoon. Fish were very agressive, hitting hard and fighting hard.

Sounds like a great day on the water!
The weather here has been so windy that nobody is getting out fishing, and the perch should be biting good right now :bawling:

I did order a new boat last weekend. It's a Starcraft 196 with a 150 Merc. main motor, and a 9.9 horse Merc. trolling motor.

I should get it in about a month.

I spent the day yesterday under my truck rewiring it for a 5 pin connector, because this new trailer has surge brakes.
I've wired a lot of boats and trailer lighting systems. I'm pretty sure that "A Correctly Wired Trailer Electrical System" is a myth that has been passed down through history ever since the wheel was used for Mesopotamian chariots in 3200 BC. I know that wiring one is the Eight Egyptian plague that accidentally got left out when the ancient Biblical texts were first translated.
This is especially true since the Chinese are now manufacturing the components necessary to complete the system.

For a 5 wire system, you have to pick up the 12 volt power supplied to your back-up lights, and it is used to power a solenoid that cuts out the surge brake system while you are backing up. That was not a big problem at all. As I progressed through the process I constantly checked to be sure it was working, and I was getting the power where I needed it.

Of course, when I ran the final test, it didn't work :dontknow:

The way I had to wire it was to wire up a new 7 pin connector on the truck, then use a 7 pin to 4 & 5 pin adapter (which are all made by the same company in China).
It turned out they wired the 7 pin receptacle one way, and the 7 to 4 & 5 adapter completely different !!
Took an extra 1/2 hour and about 17 WTFs to straighten it out, but it now works fine.

Outstanding boat Bill, it looks like you will have a lot of free board on that new boat. I'd say that we had a lot of our best times fishing when we had a 20' aluminum hulled Lund with a big outboard and a kicker for trolling. Then my buddy thought that he wanted a fiberglass 25' I/O with a thirsty 350 cu. V8 engine in it. Still not satisfied it turned into a 32 footer with twin inboard Chrysler 330 V8's in it with an 11' beam! The only way that we could afford gas for the thing was to charter fish it. I longed for the days when we could trailer and fish out of that old Lund with the walk around hull.

Now about that truck of yours with the tall rear axle gear ratio and the small motor that you are planning to tow the boat with... You are on pretty good terms with the wife are you?

Bushman,

This is getting scary... Your reading my mind.

I hope screaming bright yellow doesn't clash with my boat...

I'll have to see how mine does first....

Two things I really like about the boat... 19* dead-rise cuts the Lake Erie waves well, and having 31" wall all around keeps me and the grandson from going "Feet Wet".

I know 2 guys that have them, and they love them. Another friend just bought a new 18.5 foot Lund last year, and now he wishes he got one of these because of the ride, and it's a very dry boat even in 4 to 5 footers.

I really like that boat! Very practical, especially for big water, that can get rough in a hurry.

I had to laugh when I read about your friend's grading up. Some of my fishing pals did that, from a 16 foot McKee right into a 34 foot Bertram with twin Cat diesels. They built all their boats up themselves, and came out well ahead on sales and insurance (2 hurricanes), but now, like you said, the fuel bill means they have to take 4 to 6 people out for a tuna chase.

Sometimes, I like to just throw a canoe or kayak on top of my SUV, or a Jon boat in the back of the pickup truck, and get on the water in a hurry, catch a mess of big crappie, and be home in time to fry them for supper.

That can be the best fishin' there is.
I had a 17 foot Grumman square stern that sat so long unused, up in the barn loft, that I gave it to a friends' sons in Minnesota. They use the heck out of it like I did for many years...

I told him to get a fat girlfriend to sit up front, and he said he'd rather use a rock !!

Bill, we used Tinker the black labrador in our square ender as she was more portable than a rock and didn't eat as much as a girlfriend. We found out too that it is impossible to plane a canoe. It had a BIA rating of 3 or 4 horse power, but we used an old double hose 5 hp Johnson on it. One trip up to Lake Superior that old motor wouldn't start so the only alternative was a 25 hp Evenrude! Like trying to plane a banana and even Tinker got a little excited trying to hold down the front end.

I know, a canoe on Lake Superior... But anyone nuts enough to go that route would try the Evenrude too. It sure made a memory.
