This weekend was like all the rest. I did not get to Va till Friday afternoon so I did not hunt till Saturday afternoon. Birds did not gobble so no need to hunt. I got up fixed a pot of coffee and went and sat on the back porch looking out over the lake When Grov steps out an says lookie there, 2 toms walking our way. 2 young jakes walked with in 10 yards of the porch. All I could think of is they are messing with me. So that gets my hopes up for the afternoon. I head to the where the bird ole Tom roost. I sitting and sitting and sitting. Playing on my phone spades and sitting. Then My phone slides off my lap about 2 hours into the sit. I lean over to pick it up and while doing so I look to my left back down the tree line. Guess who I am looking EYE-BALL to EYE BALL at 10 YARDS ! DOO!!!! DOO!!! DOO !!!DOO!!! DOO!!!

Owell He was the victor. So Sunday evening Gro and I head to the lake to check out the Beaver situation and after not hearing a gobble for a week we no sooner sat down and GOBBLE from about 100 yards away. We both started laughing. Fitting end to a frustrating season.

I hear you Dave. I went 4 times and had good action on 2 or 3 of the hunts. I ended up taking a jake that came to the decoys, but started heading off when I had two gobblers working in. I had a decision, hope for the two mature birds to fly over the fence and work in another 60-70yrds, or take the jake that was 20yds away. I took the sure thing, 6:45 am.

On the up side, this jake is more tender than any mature gobbler I've taken.

The other interesting thing about that hunt, was that I was trying to set up on a loud tom that I heard the day before, and really pushed the roost/set up distance. I got out very early, set out dekes, and knew that I was going to be pretty darn close to him right off the bat. Well, the first gobble I heard that morning was about 30-35yrds straight behind my hidey spot. :eek1: Holy cow. I wasn't expecting to be that close. I didn't make a sound until 6:15 or so which is right on time for fly down, and then only made a few of the quietest clucks I could make, since I was 95% sure the roosted tom could see the dekes from his tree. That darn tom flew 200yds straight away. If I would have been set up 40-50yrds farther away, it would have been better for me. Or if I would just shut up and let the dekes do the work. Oh well, it still ended up being an action packed hunt.

Dave I learned something Saturday evening. I was facing the field I should have been facing 1/3rd into the woods. Then I would have seen him coming to the field in the evening. But then again he could have come from any direction. He's a smart ole bird. I only called about once every 20-30 minutes so he could have been hanging behind me for a while and knew right where I was. Well looks like he will be another year older and a big larger come next season. Might have to name him obama [ master of deception]. LOL
