If your mount is at the rear sight, you need a scout scope/handgun scope. Long eye relief.

for handgun use you need an EER scope.. extended eye relief...

http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/scopes/handgun-scopes/

A scout rifle uses an IER scope.. Intermediate eye relief... leupold makes those as well..

Some like a holosight... works on both scout rifles and handguns but have no magnification...

leupold is the way to go if you can afford it.

This ain't a defense type gun so a scope is desirable for max vision and accuracy.

That said, I hate eer scopes and would probably opt for irons.

Leupold holds it's value.
I'd say the scope you need depends on the use. If you're plugging bunnies and tree-rats a 3-9X40 would do ya' well.
A Leupold Rifleman series scope can be had for $200.
If you think groundhogs, fox, or yotes at 100+ yards are in your future I'd say get a 4-12X40 scope... maybe even a 6-18X.

Holding an 18X with a pistol could be a real challenge. :flute:

ncboman: A taurus 172 is a pump action rifle.

You could use something like this to bring the scope back closer to your eyes: http://www.combathunting.com/SCOPE_RINGS-Scope_Ring_Mount_Offset_Picatinny_Weaver_30mm.html .

I'd rather use offset rings than a long eye relief scope. As far as the scope itself goes, depends how much you want to spend. My .17 HMR has a Bushnell trophy 3-9x40 on it. I think it was around $60-70. It's not great, but its good enough. Whatever you pick, I'd go for something with at least 9x on the high end. Twanger's suggestion of a 4-12x is a good one, although a great big scope would look kind of funny on a trim, light rifle like yours.
