Eight assorted characters who ranging from 39 to 68 years of age met up Friday night near Marlin, TX to camp at a country park on the Brazos. They included a veternarian, two Viet vets, two military retirees, tradesmen and a retired grandmother. They had all originally come together through an internet forum. Some had met before, others had camped together on rivers and a few had never done an overnight float trip.
Saturday morning we got off and had a very hot (over 100 degrees midafternoon) float through some beautiful country. About 3:30 we found a nice sand bar to set camp and I was the first to sink myself into the river to cool off. Then we set camp and later that evening fires were built with mariated steaks, pork and chicken all hitting the grill. Baked beans, mustard potato salad, hot German potato salad, baked potatoes, grill zuchini and more were served up as sides. Sorry, there was no shrimp ring this time.:o
Fishing that day did not produce big numbers but bass, catfish, gar, drum were all caught. All but a 21" yellow cat and a 24" channel cat were released. There were two break offs that I suspect were large gar.
Sunday morning was a start of assorted breakfasts, pots of coffee and more good natured teasing and badgering as we packed. Again a hot morning of paddling in the upper 90s before we took out at 2:00. After a steep and slippery struggle uphill with gear and boats we were heading home talking about our next trip:biggrin
