View Full Version : Long range loads

I'm thinking about updating the load for the Encore, and I'm looking for a long-range load.
I've been shooting a 240gr XTP w/ 2 pyrodex pellets and ML primer, getting 1.25" 3-shot groups at 100 yds (on a good day).

Anyhoo... the logic is:
I've got a couple of ML pistols for 50 yards and in (and an iron-sighted Hawkin side-lock).
I've got a couple of White conical-shooting guns for 100 yards and in.
So I'd like to find a good accurate load for the Encore that gets me out to 150 yards... maybe 200 with a range-finder.

I'm looking into PR bullets duplex sabot in .357/195gr bullet and 100-120gr of T7fffg, but I have not bought anything yet. I've heard this load is accurate.

Any other favorite 'hot' loads out there that are still pretty accurate?

I can't help you in the powder department because I use a Savage 10ML-II with smokeless.

But for a bullet, I use 250gr .452 XTP with the Hornady 50 CAL (.452) HIGH VELOCITY BLACK SABOT and push them along at 2500 fps.
Their VERY accurate, and of the 5 deer I've shot with the load NOT ONE took one step after being hit!

Thanks for the answer Bill! Oh, by the way - I really like that fossil avatar of yours!

Some years ago I shot the 240gr XTP in black sabot and 3 pyrodex pellets, but was not as pleased with the accuracy. I think it was around 2.5 inches at 100 yards. I'll give your load suggestion a try with T72f or T73f and see what it will chrony.

That Savage can turn out some power. I bet your load shoots pretty flat and hits with authority!

Your welcome,

It does hit with authority... at both ends, but you don't notice when hunting.

That fossil is from about 18 gizzajillion years ago, and it shows that bats developed the ability to fly, before developing the use of echo location.

Another piece of useless information I do remember, but I never remember birthdays and anniversary's that I should...

I have an Omega which shoots a 240 grain 44 cal XTP seated in a green TC sabot & 100 grains of 777 2F very well. By the book the 777 is around 10-15% hotter than Pyrodex.

Just how in the world did you come to the realization that bats flew without radar?... sonar...? And just how did that bat "evolve" to fly? Where is the intermediate steps that led to its flying? It didn't just become a bat did it? Or did it?

Aloha...

Interesting stuff... proves to me that these jokers don't know what went on in this world and are usually so sure of their positions till someone comes along and proves something else. This is why science in my opinion is hypocritical.... just talking about some of these one of the articles you posted discussed how bats proliferated during a previous time of global warming... which tells me that with our current global warming, it is natural... meaning nature... and that they are trying to stop nature and good luck... though it'll cost you an me in taxes to spend on welfare for the world.

Thanks Lee - That's pretty much my go-to load, but I use two 50gr pyrodex pellets. It's very accurate, but I've found that if I start pushing the powder up too far, eventually I'll start blowing those green sabots and accuracy goes into the toilet. The black (mag) sabots have never been as accurate for me as the green ones.

Sir Rat! - Glad to see you posting here. :o How are things on the Big Island?
