a question about "who's on line

I notice that there are Yahoo spider, MSN bot spider, Jeeves spider, stuff like that.
What is it?

So either I wasn't clear or Y'all are messin' wit me.
When I clicked on the Quick Links and looked at who was on-line, I saw a few names. But then I saw where, instead of a name, it would say MSNbotspider, Google Spider, Yahoo Spider, etc...
I was just wondering what these spiders are? What does it mean when it says that instead of a name?
