I've posted this over on optics also.
I'm interested in buying crimson trace laser grips for my 1911. Which type grip do you feel is better, the front or side activated models? $299 at the local shop.
Also, is there another brand that you like better?

Are you guys sure that you want a laser sight? I had one on my .380 Government 1911 Colt for a while and it was useless in normal daylight. Maybe in the shadows at close range, but forget it in sunlight. Mine was clamped to the trigger guard and no matter how tight I tried to clamp it down, it walked around the trigger guard so that each shot went progressively higher. It was a fun little gadget at night and like Starwars in a fog at night, but I wouldn't have another one. As a sight to be used in a night defense setting, it gives a bad guy a red light source to shoot back at. About 20 years ago I built up a M1911 .45 ACP with Novak Tritium night sights and they are as bright today as they were back then. That is the way I would go again.

crimson trace is the best. true they are excellent in normal to low light conditions. also great if shooting around a corner or over an obstacle and proper sight alignment can not otherwise be made. personally, i prefer tritium night sights on my guns but have used crimson trace and they are excellent sights. good shooting

Hi Craig:

Laser sights, especially Crimson Trace are a great help with target pickup. In regular and dim light all you have to do is put the red dot on your target and squeeze the trigger. If you are laying down, on your knees, shooting around a courner, or can't bring the gun sights up to your face to line things up, they can be a life saver. You should definitely learn to use your regular sights as well. I also put on a set of Night sights like Meprolight with my CT sights. Just remember, if you go with the trigger guard mounted sights you will be very limited to your choice of holsters. The pistol grip Crimson Trace sights have much more options. Yes, I have both, and they both work well. I have the CT trigger guards on my Ruger LCP and Glock 27, and the grip sight on my Kimber CDP. I think they are a GREAT addition on a combat handgun.

Remember you don't have to use them if you don't want to. Relax your middlefinger on the Triggerguard CT and it stays off. The handgrip CT sight has an on and off switch.

I am not a fan of laser sights on pistols! I have seen my fair share of them "fail" on Glocks, S&W revolvers and Colts too. I don't want to depend on something that takes more time and also one must change their thought process, (like hunting with different rifles and not knowing where the safety is at during that split half second to shoot etc) I'll use the night sights on my pistol in the dark.
