Lamplighter, thanks for this post. There is a lot of very interesting info there and not just about LA. It should be very encouraging to LA hunters to see the results of the B&C records noted.
Louisiana
is not nationally known as one of the top states for
deer hunting. During the 2002/03 season only 826
nonresident big game season licenses were sold
and only 915 nonresident big game five-day hunt
licenses were sold. In contrasts, there were 8,594
nonresident duck licenses sold. We are known for
our waterfowl hunting. If our deer quality is good,
why is there so little attention from non-resident
deer hunters? All of the land in Louisiana is
basically leased or posted by resident landowners
and hunters. Except for the public lands, which a
much more limited than in many other states, there
really is no place for nonresidents to deer hunt.
This lack of access will probably prevent
Louisiana from ever being in the national spotlight
for deer hunting.
It is actually far more complex than that in my opinion. Right next door there is TX with very little public access but what is different is that the land owners here court outside the state hunters for their greenbacks, they will pay better than locals. If LA landowners took the same approach they could certainly get more out of state hunters. Based on my experience and knowing a few LA hunters that hunt TX, many LA hunters would be very negative if they detected that approach getting started. There are a few high fence ops that I am aware of there that have real problems with outside troublemakers that don't share my opinion that a landowner has a lot of freedom with his own property.
